Narrow convertible CS's besides radians?

We fit our two Boulevards and a KeyFit30 across the back of my SUV, but I definitely cannot fit 3 Boulevards. I ordered 3 Diono Radians and intended to put the Blvds in my H's car, but when I installed the Radians I wasn't impressed. They felt flimsy and unsafe. I brought it to our local police dept to check my installation and it was correct, but the seat had so much give that I returned them. Not sure if the quality has changed from the change in brand?

Anyway, I really don't want to change cars once all three are in convertible seats. What other narrow seats are there on the market?

I tried to go to the Britax website to get information on their product's dimensions and they weren't posted. But I was thinking maybe even marathons would be narrower than the boulevards?

Re: Narrow convertible CS's besides radians?

  • Are they not steel any more?  Mine aren't flimsy at all.  They have a steel frame and weigh a gazillion lbs.  They also are kind of a difficult unusual install.  I had to call Radian for help the first time:

Try googling three carseats across for the kind of car you have.  You might get some pics and combos.  Sadly, I had to get a minivan...

Yeah ours are steel too and super heavy too, but I do have pre diono take over ones so maybe they made some changes.

  • I just had a thought.  when RFing, mine have this plastic insert thing that has to be locked in to the base of the seat. It would be wobbly without that.

I had the insert in and they were heavy as fcuk. But the seat itself had so much give and I just felt like my kid was out there. I can't explain it, compared to my Britax seats it just felt unstable and unsafe. H and I looked at one another after the inspection and were like, okay back they go. Both of us didn't feel comfortable using the seats.

    I had the Diono R100's.

  • We looked at the radians and almost purchased them until the lady at bbb told us that they are not as safe for side impact crashes. Because they are so narrow and trim they don't protect as well from glass debris and such during a side impact. Which if you look at them compared to other seats that have more of a side "wing" that makes sense.

Do you mean the back and forth motion when you push on the top?  They're supposed to do that some.  It has to do with what they do in a crash.  It's lessened when you use the tether.  Also, most seats aren't supposed to touch the seats in front of them, but Radians can because of the steel frame.  The steel frame really makes them install differently.

This link had lots of successful 3 across combos that might be helpful:

  • Combi Cocurro's are as narrow however, they don't RF past 33lbs and only go to 40lbs. We love ours but we have a peanut who at 22mo is only 23lbs so we have no issue with the size.
