Infertility

Am I the only person who reads about the worst side effects (just a rant)?

Seriously! Everyone seems so medicine happy these days. Whenever a dr tells me they are going to give me something I immediately look it up and scroll to the bottom to see just how bad it can really be. I see all over TB, all the time, women wanting ovulating inducing drugs to get pg "faster". WTF? Did you read ANY of the product information or did you miss the life-threatening complications and where you can lose your ovaries?

Sorry - end rant. Just frustrated today because I am infertile and I wish I didn't have to take any drugs, ever.

Me: 37 DH: 40 TTC since 9/09
#1 BFP 1/10/11; missed m/c discovered 7w5d

#1 IUI: 1/18/12 = BFN
#1 IVF/ICSI 4/2/12 = 2 x 7-cell and 1 x 5-cell transferred (3dt) = BFP!!
H was born at 41w2d on 12/29/12 - be still my heart!
#2 IVF/ICSI 1/19/14 = 2 x 8 cells transferred (3dt) = BFP!! EDD 10/09/14
M&W born at 37 weeks on 9/18/14 - I am the momma of 3 boys!!!

Re: Am I the only person who reads about the worst side effects (just a rant)?

  • Loading the player...
  • I usually take a look, but with a grain of salt.  During a clinical trial, if something goes wrong (that may have nothing to do with the drug) they have to report it.  So some side effects are extremely rare and may or may not be linked to the drug.  Or are linked but happened because the person has something else wrong with them in the first place (sometimes identifiable, sometimes not).

Now that being said... I definitely agree with your rant where fertility drugs are concerned.  Seems to be way too much clomid pill popping without monitoring/thinking about the consequences!!

  • You're not alone, but I tend not to focus on it. In my late teens and 20's I had some severe depression and was on lots of different antidepressants - I used to read all the materials but now I don't so much. I get a little worried about IF drugs, especially the hormonal ones (injectables) because I just don't know if that can be good in the long run - but I'm not focusing on that right now. I just can't.

I DID however read up on Lupron and was amused/dismayed that it is used on sex offenders to control their urges. Wow. REALLY? That became a joke between me and DH.

    4w c/p loss 10/29/12 - EDD July 2013

Long story: trying on our own + testing testing testing with 6 rounds of Clomid, more testing, injectables + TI, laparoscopy - one tube blocked, 2 IUIs with Follistim...BFNs.
RPL testing all normal, Karyotyping normal

    Moving on to IVF.

    IVF #1 April 2012 = BFN, IVF #2 June 2012 = BFP. U/S 7/23 = saw heartbeat but measuring behind. Follow up U/S on 7/30 - no heartbeat. D&C 8/2. Trisomy 12. IVF #3 Oct 2012 = Chemical Pregnancy

Phone consult with CCRM on 12/12/12 - ODWU 1/4/13 - both tubes clear(!) - AFC 24, AMH 3.2, FSH 9.6, LH 5.4, E2 25. DH has high frag rate but improved!
    IVF #4 March 2013 CCRM. EP protocol w/ Menopur, Gonal-F & Dexamethasone. ER 3/29 & IMSI, PICSI. 43R 13M 10F 6blasts bio'd. CCS testing reveals 3 normals!!!
    FET 5/31/13 of 1 4AA blast - thawed and expanded. 4dp5dt BFP.
    Beta 9dp5dt = 181, 11dp5dt = 427. 1st u/s showed a healthy heartbeat! EDD 2/16/14

After 4 years of hoping and heartbreak, our sweet little bean was born on 2/19/14

Ha on the the trivia tid bit! Yeah I don't know which one I am either - amused/dismayed...

I don't really focus on them, but I do read them because they happen. I am pretty hesitant about using any medication period, so I think I am hyper-sensitive to it to begin with. If I were a "lucky person" I wouldn't be here to begin with so I don't rely on luck to keep me out of harms way. KWIM?

  • I'm not one to want to take drugs. The whole concept of all the crap I will be injecting myself with in a few weeks totally freaks me out. So, yes...I agree with you and I love that you speak up about it when people bring it up.
    3 ectopic pregnancies (EDD's 1/30/12-tube removed, 6/2/12-methotrexate and 10/2/12-methotrexate)
IVF and Natural FET resulted in BFN's and a hole in our wallets
Natural BFP #4 on 9/7/12 gave us our miracle on 5/18/13

  • I read the worst side effects all the time....I want to know what to look for.  I get upset that my insurance company is dictating what I take and not my doctor.  Because they have certain protocol I am going through months of putting chemicals and hormones into my body that my doctor doesn't believe are really the best option for me but it is what insurance says we have to do to move up the chain to where the doctor wants to be.  So frustrating!
