won't sleep unless in a sleepsack

I'm wondering how to go about getting my girls to go to sleep without having to be zipped up in their fleece sleepsacks? They transitioned to them so easily after being swaddled, but now they won't sleep without them. They fling their legs everywhere and toss and turn and whine and fuss...I just can't afford to keep buying the next size up, those things are expensive, even used! I want my kids to sleep like other babies I know that just go to sleep in pajamas...sigh. I either need to break this habit or learn to make my own sleepsacks.

Re: won't sleep unless in a sleepsack

  • There are tons of tutorials on the web, they are actually really easy to sew. I know I can't sleep without a heavy comforter so I'd cut the babies some slack. Even if you have to buy them, the next size should last for a long time (I just bought the 6-18 month size)
  • Em actually wore them through last summer.  I bought the biggest size and just stuck with that one.  It was huge on her but she did fine and could walk in it.  Maybe buy 2 or 3 sizes up and leave it at that?  They might also stop when it gets hot out...

  • Mine are 16 months and still use them. I can't just put them to bed in jammies because I wouldn't be comfortable without a blanket, so I feel like they wouldn't either. They sleep too good in them to try something different! I agree though, they are expensive, especially when you have to keep buying bigger sizes and different materials (we do fleece and cotton, depending on the season).

Have you tried getting the next size up from what you "should" get? I find that they are huge, but it doesn't really matter. It's mainly just the length, which doesn't matter that much. Maybe that way, you could get by for almost a year (at this stage in their growth).

As an extra bonus of the sleepsacks, someone mentioned to me that she kept her son in them because he was a climber, but he couldn't climb out of his crib with the sleepsack on. Just something else to think about when your girls get older. You may have a climber and would be glad you kept them in sleepsacks!

Also, I don't know if you know or not, but Babies R Us regularly has a Buy One, Get One Half Off sale on sleepsacks, so that's only $30 total for two. Plus, you can always get your hands on their 20% off one baby item coupon.

My kids are almost 19mo and we will use them until they don't fit, b/c I don't want to deal with them not sleeping. Can you buy 2 more in the XL size? Even if they're huge they'll probably still fit and they'll last a long time. They make cotton ones so you can use them in the summer and winter. Babies R Us has buy one get one half off deals a lot, plus their coupons can usually be used on them. Or like the p.p. said they're not hard to make if you or someone you know sews.
  • Another sleep sack lover here!  20 months and going strong!

Ditto all the PPs - buy them in the next size up in cotton!

  • Mine still sleep in their sleep sacks.  If they are sleeping soundly, leave them alone.

I keep their room at a constant 67/68 degrees all year long so,  temperature isn't an issue.

  • I agree! Stick with the sleep sacks! Mine love to be bundled and seem so sensitive to getting cool. The sacks are great!

  • Mine are 25months old and still in sleepsacks and will be for at least another year. We are currently in XL they have plenty of room.  I also bought a 2T one off craiglist for $5, found another XL at a consignment store for $2, so just keep an eye out for them. Also, Babies R Us website usually does BOGO 50% at least a few times a year so I wait until I get  deal.

If it helps them sleep and comforts them esp at such a young age - why would you want to rock the boat?

I will do just about anything just to make sure mine sleep well  LOL :)

    Good luck!

This!  Mine are almost two and I've been wondering if we should get the next size or stop using sleep sacks completely.  I do believe they keep the kids from climbing out of their cribs and from waking up cold after kicking off a blanket, so I'm glad to see I'm not a total weirdo for wanting to keep using them.  If the kids seemed unhappy, I'd stop, but they seem comfortable.  :)

  • our son was in the sack until age 2.  he didnt want his arms strapped down at around 5-6 months.  after that it was just the sacks.  i dont think 10 months is bad to still have them in there....and it is the safest...
  • Phew, lets just say hallelujah sleepsacks!! I'm convinced! Especially the point about them not being able to climb out of the crib with the sleepsack--that right there is worth it all! Thanks ladies!
