Breastfeeding

Won't take a boob for more than a few mins!

My DD is 3 weeks and 1 day, and she is starting to not feed for very long at each boob. She'll do like 6 or 7 mins on one side, then act completely full, then an hour later, maybe 4-6 mins of another. I had oversupply issues with my DS (though I was an EPer for a few months) and when I pump, I can usually get about 4-5oz in 10m or less, so I am trying to figure out if she is getting her 3oz in such a short time and that's why she is full? She cluster feeds all evening though (3 week growth spurt?) which drives me nuts and we usually give her a bottle of pumped milk around 8 or 9 as I can't handle it anymore and she is acting starving and refusing the boob. I feel like she doesn't BF long enough though, and can't be getting the hind milk but I can't force her to drink more. Very frustrating. Not sure what to do.

I would place a bet on her being full! I had the exact same problems with my DS. I had an oversupply and he was taking 3-4 oz in 7 minutes! I found this out by doing a weighed feeding at a breastfeeding support group at the hospital where I delivered. The LC was shocked - and so was I - but that was the solution. I had gone because I could not keep him latched for more than 7 or 8 minutes, nevermind the 20 they were telling me he needed.

Cluster feeding in the evening is normal. If she starts refusing the breast, I would assume that she is full and not bother with the bottle of pumped milk. The evening is a classic time for all babies to get fussy, it might not be related to hunger at all. Do you have a Moby wrap? That thing saved me around that time. Put DS in there and he felt like he was being held, but I could get up and eat or just do anything else but sit there holding a crying baby.

As far as hind milk goes, just keep feeding on one side at a time and your oversupply will come down, and then she will be getting the hind milk just fine. It's what I've always done since that weighed feed at 3 weeks and it's worked out great for us. Good luck!

  • I you're worried about hind milk, keep an eye on her poop. If it's yellow she is getting it. Green poop can be an indicator of an imbalance

  • If she wants to eat again within the hour, I would put her back on the same side. That way she will get that hind milk and if you have an oversupply issue this will help even it out. GL!

Her poop has only been yellow - I've not seen a green poop from her yet.  Thanks for that tip!!
