Pregnant after IF

How do I tell a potential new boss?

I called a school for an interview for a fifth grade position. If I do get the interview, I am going to tell that I am pg. and will miss the first six weeks of school. I know by law I don't have to tell but I am going to because I don't want to start off a new position by lying. How would you work this info. into the interview? TIA!

Re: How do I tell a potential new boss?

  • If I were you, I would not tell at the interview. Choosing to not talk about private family matters is not the same as lying. I just started my current job around the same time that I got my bfp, and I did not tell my boss until nearly 20 weeks. They were understanding and not upset that I waited so long to tell. Being cautious in early pregnancy is understandable to most people.

  • However, I am almost 20 weeks and if I don't tell, especially because I will miss the first six weeks of the new school year, it will start me off on a bad foot. I don't want to do that!

  • are you showing?

if no, i would not tell until offered the position and then i would say, i would really like to accept this position but i am pregnant and will miss x amount at beginning of year.

  • I agree with PPs -- I wouldn't tell during the interview phase. It's definitely not the same as lying. Even if you are showing, I would not bring it up. Your pregnancy should have no bearing on hiring status.

  • Illegal or not, saying you are pregnant and will miss the first 6 weeks of school is going to greatly hurt your chances of being offered this position. There is no way I would disclose until the position had been offered. It's not lying in the least bit. I think Worms' suggestion is wonderful.

  • i felt obligated to tell my boss when i got hired that iwas going through IVF and would need time off. i didn't have to but it worked out for me. she was really suppotive and i think appreciated the heads up. BUT there is no way to tell if would affect you getting the position and you don't have to tell them and it's against the law for them to ask you about it. my guess is you're probably showing and it won't need to be said. GL hopefully this is a better prinicpal than your current one.

  • If I wear my tightest clothes, I have a small baby bump, but people told me they only know because they know I'm pg. Does that make sense? I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot. Yes, it's illegal, but they can do all sorts of things if they feel I misrepresented myself in the interview. Sigh! I'm so excited to be pg., but this whole missing the first six weeks sucks and I so want out of my job. Probably this will not even matter because they said they were going to talk to my boss before they decided to interview me and I'm sure she'll tank me!

You are not misrepresenting yourself. The interview is about your teaching skills, not your ute. ;)  I understand how you feel, but it is NOT lying to not disclose a pregnancy. They are legally not allowed to ask you, and you ate legally not obligated to tell at this point.

I don't think it's misrepresenting yourself at all. I am a school VP, and there is not part of any interview I've done that involves questions about the personal life and family of a candidate, so what's going on in your ute has nothing to do with your teaching ability. If I really wanted that person in a classroom, and I found out after I offered a job that they were pregnant, I would still be glad we have a new great teacher for the rest of the time.   Also, if your current principal does say something, contact your union, as that would be a HIPPA violation. He/she has no right to share personal health information with you, as it has nothing to do with your ability as a teacher.

  • I agree with PPs not to tell until you are offered the job.  I am a teacher and also plan on interviewing to change schools for next year.  I am not going to say anything at the interviews, but tell them when (if) I am offered the position.  By law, they cannot take back the offer after you tell them and then you are not "lying".

Sorry, wrote that part wrong. My boss hates me and will probably tell that I suck as a teacher, not that I'm pregnant.
