Nap/Play time question

If your LO is playing really well and is happy, but you know it's nap time...

Would you pick them up and put them down for a nap or leave them playing?

She is being so good playing, but I don't want her to get over tired.

Re: Nap/Play time question

  • If my LO is showing no tired signs I let him keep playing for another 20 min and start looking for tired cues.

  • I pick DS up and go up to his room. I always bring him up about 15 minutes before I want him to be sleeping to give me a chance to change his diaper, read a story, sing songs...

DS goes from happy to overtired in a matter of seconds though, so I don't let his bubbly self fool me. He's quite consistent with a 2h awake time period.

My DD is like PPs' LO.

  • It's so hard to read them at this age.  Right now we're at 2hr 40-45min of awake time and today he showed zero signs when I put him down for his am nap.  I questioned putting him down.  But he was out in 3 mins and has been asleep for an hr and 20 min so far, so who the heck knows???????
  • My two rules are

    a) don't disturb the happy baby

    b) don't disturb the sleeping baby

Basically, I let her be until she indicates otherwise.

I'm not real strict on nap time though. She has two naps a day but they very anywhere within an hour time span usually. Sometime between 10-11 and again between 1:30-3ish.

  • I always leave DD play until she runs out of steam.  Her sleepy cues are really easy to read, even when she is trying to hide them from me.  I've tried to approach sleep in the middle of playing because it was "time" for a nap, and she just would not sleep and roamed around her crib instead.  I find if I let her wear herself out playing, she lets me know she is ready for sleep.

Same here. I don't have a schedule but we have a routine. Depending on when he wakes up, his naptime could be anywhere from 9:30-11:30

  • I am trying to time naps at 9 and 1....within a 30 minute window.  Some of DSs best naps are when he doesn't seem tired.  Maybe by the time he shows tired signs he's already tired?  I'm sure this is something that varies baby to baby and changes as they get older.

  • I never put her down if she isn't showing signs of being sleepy like yawning or rubbing her eyes or face. If I put her down and she's not sleepy, she will likely cry for the entire time. I'd wait till she's sleepy.
