Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Show me your 6 month old schedules please :-)

I am struggling to get a good schedule for my almost six month old due to him taking very short naps and being so overtired as a result. Wondering if I am keeping him up too long and therefore he is not restful? I tend to keep him up 2 hours...by this time I had DS 1 on a really nice schedule and I am really struggling with it this time around. Maybe he is not full enough to sleep good naps? He is EBF and just started oatmeal in the evenings.  Also if you could share how early you start the naptime routine before putting LO down that would help!! Thanks!!! Really appreciate it/any advice.

Re: Show me your 6 month old schedules please :-)

  • Nap routine is super short, so it starts when I think she's ready to sleep. Just change diaper, put on sleep sack, hug and kiss and rub her back for a second after I turn on her seahorse. Our schedule is not rigid at all, it's more of a routine, but here it is:

6:30/7 Wake up and 7 oz bottle
8:30/9ish first nap, usually 45 minutes but sometimes up to 1.5 hours
    10:30/11ish 7 oz bottle
11:30/12ish second nap, usually closer to 1 hour, sometimes up to 2 hours
    2:30/3ish 7 oz bottle
3:30/4ish third nap, usually just 30 min, maybe 1 hour
    6:30/7ish 7 oz bottle
    7:30ish bedtime

Everything could be shifted by an hour either way depending on how early/late she wakes up. Awake time between naps is about 1.5 to 2 hours, 3 at most. She's not a terrific napper, but that due in part to a noisy big sister :) We've been doing solids but she eats very little (1/2 tsp to 1 tsp at a sitting). We try to do solids twice a day, typically after her first nap and after dinner.

  • My LO is 7 months, but has pretty much had this same schedule since 6 months-

7am wake up, bottle, then play in bouncy while mommy gets ready for work

(on our days off, she lays back down with me and sleeps until about 9 or 9:30)

8:15am leave for babysitter's house, sometimes a quick nap in the car

8:30am get to sitter's, play, sometimes short nap (45 minutes at most)

10am cereal and fruit for breakfast, then a little playtime

    11am bottle, play

Noonish long nap (about 2 hours)

    2pm bottle

    3pm jar of veggies, play

    4:30pm nap

5:30 pm pick up by Daddy

6pm bottle, then playtime with Daddy or a quick fishing trip down to the pond (she loves watching daddy fish!)

7pm sometimes a short nap, 30 minutes, or playtime

    8pm cereal and a veggie, then playtime/bath/storytime

    9pm bottle, then bed

ETA:  no real routine about laying down for naps, I just watch for her cues, then lay her down and she goes to sleep.  We also don't have an extremely rigid nap schedule either.  If she's tired, she naps.  If not, she plays.

This is almost exactly our schedule with my DD.  Her 1st and 2nd naps range from 30-90 minutes.  On the few occasions that she has slept 2+ hours, she may just take 2 naps that day.  Her awake time is usually 2 hours in the AM, and 2 1/2-3 hours the rest of the day.  She still usually needs a catnap in the early evening.  We don't really have a naptime routine.  My DD is pretty obvious about her tired cues, so I put her down in her crib.  We recently did sleep training, so she gets no music, no paci.  Sometimes she fusses, but she does that when she's tired.  Usually she's asleep 5-10 minutes after I lay her down.

  • We also struggle with short naps more often than not, so here is our typical day.

    7am - wake up

    7:30 - BF

    9am - nap

    11am - BF

    11:30am - solids

12pm - nap (or sooner/later depending on his first nap; I generally put him down 2h after he wakes up)

    2pm - BF

3:30pm - nap (again, this varies depending on what time he got up from nap #2)

    5pm - BF

    5:30pm - solids

6:40pm - bath and bedtime routine

  • DD wakes between 6 and 6:30 (if earlier I feed and she goes back to sleep till 6:30 or so).   So our schedule varies about 1/2 hour based on morning wake time and then how long each nap is but roughly:

    6am Morning wake

    7am - eat

8am - First nap (roughly 2hrs from morning wake time). 45min-90min.

10am- Eat (midway between 1st nap and 2nd)

    12:00 / 1:00 Second nap (roughly 2.5hrs maybe 3 from first nap so earliest 11:15 and latest 1pm). 45min-2hrs

    2pm Eat

3:30/4pm Third nap (roughly 2.5 hours from second nap).  If her first two are really long and it gets to late in the day I sometimes skip this because her bedtime is 6:30.  Usually this is a 30-40min nap but sometimes I get an hour and then I have to bump bedtime to 7pm.

    4:00 Eat (after nap)

    6:00 Eat

    6:30 asleep

ETA: Our nap routine is up to her room, sleep sack and white noise on, read 3 board books, turn out the light, sing Puff the Magic Dragon (1-3 rounds) and then in her crib.

  • 6:30 wake

    8ish breakfast

    9 ish nap 1

    11:30 ish nap 2

2-3 ish nap 3 (all naps are 30 min to 1 hour)

    5 pm dinner

    6 pm bath, nursing, etc.

6:45 ish asleep until morning (or sometimes quick 4 am feed)

  • My son is almost 8 months and as he has always slept well, my Dr said I could push his schedule around during the day to suit my needs and it was the best thing I ever did.  He sleeps 8pm to 7am.  Naps for 1 hour at 10am and for 2 hrs at 2pm.  Breakfast at 8 ish and lunch at 1ish.  Dinner at 5/6 depending on DH.  Sometimes a bottle or paci to settle him, and a book before and after naps, before bed, and when he wakes and is calm.  Warm wash cloth on fbathing body or warm bath before bed.  Hope this helps :)
