As soon as the OB started the ultrasound, we could clearly see two babies. He got a measurement and heartbeat on one and everything measured perfectly. Every time he moved the dildocam, both babies moved, but he couldn't get a heartbeat on the second one. He said the second baby measured exactly the same as the first baby (7w3d) but he just couldn't pick up a heartbeat, even though we could sort of make out the second heart beating, too.
The thing that was bizarre was that there were two uteruses, totally not connected. This never showed up on any of my ultrasounds with DD, though I switched OBs midway through my pregnancy so maybe something was missed early on.
Poor DH was white as a ghost wondering if I was carrying twins. The OB took the camera out and tried doing an exam to see if he could find two cervices, which would explain the two uteruses he saw on the ultrasound. Meanwhile, he asked the technician to restart the ultrasound machine. He only found one cervix and decided to try the ultrasound again, and this time there was only one uterus and one healthy baby. Somehow the ultrasound machine got set to some weird "double image" setting where it showed a mirror image of the baby next to the actual image, so we could see the heartbeat and that's why it kept moving, but that mirror image was unable to measure a heartbeat, hence the lack of a second heartbeat.
So bottom line is I have ONE baby, not two, and it's as healthy as can be!!!
