XP: LO bad reaction to starting solids?

We started LO on solids last Wednesday.  We mixed sweet potatoes with rice cereal.  Every night after eating she is crying like she is in pain.  Last night was so bad that woke up screaming about an hour after she went to sleep.

I feel like she might have gas or a stomach ache.

Did anyone else's LO have this reaction to starting solids?  What did you do to fix it?

We are going to lay off eating anything for a couple days and then we're thinking maybe starting with just a small amount of rice cereal again.

Any suggestions would be super helpful!!

Re: XP: LO bad reaction to starting solids?

  • Stop the rice cereal. She may be getting constipated even if it doesn't seem like she is.  This happened to my LO.  So we skipped all cereal and went straight to fruits and veggies.  Also, maybe try feeding solids earlier in the day.

  • I agree with PP.  Rice cereal is binding and can cause upset stomachs and constipation.

  • I would also suggest stopping the rice cereal. Some babies to get gassy from it, and it can be constipating. We skipped rice and went to oatmeal with both of my girls, and introduced rice later when they were doing well with solids.

  • What brand of cereal are you using?
  • My LO had this same problem!  We started with Oatmeal cereal and he woke up screaming in pain all night long.  He was gassy.  We then waited a week and tried sweet potatoes earlier in the day (hoping it would all be digested by bed time).  Same thing.  Gassy and screaming out in pain all night long.  We then gave up on solids for the time and have yet to re-introduce them.  I am going to ask his Dr for suggestions on what foods may be easiest on his tummy.

So basically, I have no advice but can commiserate :)
