TTC After a Loss

Progesterone Test Results

My new OB's nurse (nicest lady on the planet!) called to discuss the bloodwork I just had done. No thyroid issues, but my progesterone is alarming. It's a 0. As in none. I'm a dude. Even though I'm in the follicular stage, my OB was expecting it to be higher, since the sample was taken just a week after my D&C.

We all know how controversial progesterone is in the land of miscarriages (i.e. Did the low progesterone cause the miscarriage, or is the progesterone low because of the miscarriage?). Anyway, we'll retest when I'm 7DPO.

The confusing thing is that my progesterone was at FORTY at the beginning of my last pregnancy. WTF?

I feel like the more I know, the more confused I get.

It was a rough road, but Arlo Daniel was born April 1, 2013—and our second rainbow is due October 12, 2014.

Wishing you luck with your later test, sorry your body isn't getting the memo on what it is supposed to be doing right now. Must have gotten lost in the mail. Its ok though, happens to the best of us!

  • I'm curious why he tested your progesterone before O?  If it was 40 during your pregnancy, I would imagine that you don't have an issue.

Right! I'm seriously thrown for a loop here.

  • I would be thoroughly confused also.  So sorry you're not getting clear answers yet.  I really hope the 7dpo test shows to be normal.  I second Rosie though in that I'm glad at least you're now with someone with whom you're feeling comfortable!

  • Maybe they made a mistake??  0 seems low (duh!)...  especially if you've gotten pregnant in the past.  I hope your 7DPO result is more understandable.

No idea how to help on understanding that insanely confusing information, but I wanted you to know that I'm so happy that you're having positive medical experiences (with your new OB and the nurse today). What a relief when we actually like the people we kind of have to trust!

This exactly. I'm glad you're free of Dr. Lupus and can get some better care. Hope they get to the bottom of this soon.

Hahaha! Dr. Lupus. That made my night.

  • :S ? For you - do you have any of your previous charts accessible? I can only see your 2, and that's not helpful because of the pg.  One  indicator of low progesterone is rocky post o temps, or very little rise. IDE be curious to see what your other charts look like - if the low P4 is just your hormones out of whack after lost or if this was possibly an issue before.

If this posts twice, it's a Bump burp. I totally responded 5 minutes ago, but it hasn't posted (yet?).

Anyway. It was something to the effect of:

    Holy crap.

I used to actually plot my temps on a graph I printed from mymonthlycycles.com because a) I'm living in the 90s and b) I never imagined this was going to be such a freaking journey. Anyway, I only have 3 charts from back before I was ever pregnant, and my post-O temps look like a mountain range. My LP was also 10 days on all 3 of them--another sign of low progesterone, right? Interesting.

Thanks for the info! Methinks something's up.

ETA: Also, on these old charts, I had 3-4 days of spotting before CD1. Hmmmm.

    Wow.

I mean it should be low in the FP, but low like "<1". I've never seen a 0 before.

    But, you aren't a dude.

See... it's ok for me to have a girl crush, but DH would be PISSED if I crushed on a guy!

    Wink

I hope your 7dpo gives more clarity and a better result.

You KNOW something's good when I still laugh the 3rd time I read it. :P

  •  I found this on WebMD. Obviously they are mistaken about CD 1-14 and CD 15-28, unless we are the only freaks in this world without 28-day cycles.Anywho, if you interpret the first to mean pre-O and the second to mean post-O, maybe this could be helpful?  Progesterone levels during the menstrual cycle 1Days 1-14:Less than 1 nanogram per milliliter (ng/mL) or 0.5-2.3nanomoles per liter (nmol/L)Days 15-28:2-25 ng/mL or 6.4-79.5 nmol/L

Wikipedia actually has a really great graph of hormone levels (it then links to page that shows how all 4 female hormones work in conjunction with each other). What's great about it is it shows the variability between women and what is normal range. I posted it here a few weeks ago, and would link it but on phone. Google progesterone and go to the wiki link, it's really helpful.

Pan, I can't take credit for the rock temp knowledge, but am passing on info from my acu. That was the first thing she said to me when she saw my chart at 7dpo. FWIW, I've started a backup chart of TCYOF (whose interface sucks btw) where I enter vaginal temps. (FF has been oral so far) because I was curious of my dramatic changes were temping style or my body. It confirmed it was in fact my body, and not mouth temping.

  • Could it be a lab error? This was my only thought seeing as I have no other experience with this.

P.s. don't judge the fact that I'm bumping at 4:00am, we're driving and I can't sleep and there's not much to do in the dark.
