NON MILITARY OBGYN IN NORFOLK?

I live in norfolk va and I'm 5 weeks preg. I heard from several ppl that dealing with military docs are awful. Can anyone recommend a obgyn near norfolk? Thanks :)

  • Lots of people also have great experiences with military doctors. Give it a chance. Have an open mind.

I'm not in Norfolk, but my experiences with military physicians have been on par with my experiences in civilian practices.

  • This is where I go to. drcoltrin.com I have been there a couple times now and really love them. They take both Standard and Prime I believe. The office is right at the border of Norfolk and VA Beach.

  • Just so you are aware Portsmouth Naval Medical has the highest level NICU in the area. Obviously, hoping you have an easy pregnancy/birth, but I gave birth there 4 years ago to twins who spent a month in the hospital and they had excellent care.

  • I wouldn't worry about the quality of the military ob/gyns especially at NMCP. I am going there for my prenatal care and I have been very happy so far. Also the prior poster was right. If your baby needs a nicu the one at NMCP is great.  Sorry I don't know any civilian obs in the area since I have tricare prime.

Yes  I'm on board with this. I think every hospital will have its share of 'horror stories', but remember, people are far more likely to circulate a negative experience than they are to share a positive one. I have used both civilian and military OB's during this pregnancy (PCS'd at 20 weeks) and the quality of care has been the same. I just did the L&D tour last week, and feel great about delivering there. Even though my pregnancy has been uncomplicated so far, I also feel better with the high-level NICU there. Give them a chance before you bail.

  • I totally recommend Dr. Bertelino at Tidewater Healthcare for Women. She's great! :)

  • I ran far far away from Portsmouth Naval based on many factors but mostly because I wanted a med-free birth. If that appeals to you, check out the Midwifery Center at DePaul. If not, I know Women Care Centers is a good practice but only know first hand about their midwives.

Ditto pp about DePaul.  Lots of my friends have been very happy with their care at the midwifery center.  For the record, I had both of my kids at Portsmouth.  DD1's birth was fine and DD2's totally sucked due to incompetent nurses and doctors.  While they do have a great NICU at Portsmouth, it's full most of the time.  I had pre-term labor with DD1 and they ended up transferring me to Sentara General (which is right across from a children's hospital) incase I delivered.

  • I HIGLHY recommend Dr. MaryBeth Dixon at the Woman's Care Center on 150 Kingsley. She's been awesome. She's patient, spends time with you. She's excellent. They're also attached to Bon Secours (the only hospital with a natural birthing section if you are looking at that option).

We interviewed her and clicked IMMEDIATELY. She gets better and better with every visit.!!

I did tours of the hospitals first to get a feel. Go tour Bon Secours before making any decisions. You have time with just being 5 weeks.

  • He's across the water in Newport News, but Dr Joseph King was awesome.  I had to see him as a specialist, and he was great.  My regular OB, Dr Amy Campbell (also in NN) was good too.

This isn't true.  CHKD (Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters) in Norfolk as the largest and most sophisticated NICU in the Hampton Roads area.  Portsmouth does have a Level III NICU, but it isn't the "highest level in the area".  As a matter of fact, when my friend gave birth to a 24 weeker at Portsmouth they flew her baby to CHKD.

They may give you a dating ultrasound but that differs by provider. Even so, don't get your hopes up on hearing anything as the embryo is still pretty tiny.
  • They gave me an ultrasound and we got to see the baby and hear the heartbeat! It was so amazing :) My next app is at 11 weeks. Do you know if they will give me an ultrasound then? I'm only asking since you went to the same place. Thanks :)
