Cloth Diapering

soakers?

I use Kushies diaper covers for my pre-folds.  I wanted to make fleece soakers to use as covers.  Do they work just was well as the PUL Covers??

Re: soakers?

  • I have limited experience with fleece soakers. My mom made 2 for DD recently. I like them, but I don't trust them as much as PUL, especially if she'll be sitting down, for example, in her highchair. If she's on the go, crawling, changing positions constantly, she seems ok, but if she's sitting continuously her onesie tends to get damp. I do love how nicely they fit her though, and that they're more breathable than PUL. I also like being able to pull them on while she's wriggling away from me when I'm changing her, as opposed to trying to hold her still to put a cover on and velcro or snap it tightly. My mom has more fleece to make more covers, and I asked her to put an extra layer of fleece in the "soak zone" of them. I think that will help with the wicking issue. HTH. :)

  • fleece will be more prone to compression leaks but it's more breathable than PUL.  Have you thought about wool?  If you want to make them yourself and can't knit or crochet you can always find wool sweaters at the thrift store and felt them slightly (sometimes they've already been felted) and then you just cut and sew like you would the fleece.  Once lanolized they're pretty bulletproof, and unlike fleece you don't have to wash them every time they're used.
