Good morning ladies! I can't believe I'm actually to that point where I can intro over here on PAL! I would have done it sooner, but things have been a little trying since Abigail's birth (mostly all BF related). I can't wait to be a more regular poster on here and get to know those of you that I didn't know from PAL!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to increased swelling and a massive migraine that resulted in a trip to L&D last Monday, my OB decided it was best that we induce my labor last week. I was admitted to L&D at 6pm on Wednesday the 21st. They got me hooked up and checked my cervix again - still barely a cm dilated. They inserted some pill to help ripen my cervix and then basically told me and dh to rest up. I started to have lots of uncomfortable cramping in both my abdomen and back and therefore couldn't sleep at all. Finally at 6 am my nurse started the pitocin and I had contractions that were few and far between (uncomfortable but not too bad). My OB came by around 8 am, broke my water, and said I was dilated about the same, a little softer but no real progress.
Throughout the day they increased my pitocin and continued to check my cervix. I had a lot of back labor, which was very uncomfortable. I forget what time it was exactly but they offered me a drug to help allow me to sleep. I remember still laboring in my "sleep" as it didn't ease the labor pains. They offered me my epidural at 11:30 am because my pain was pretty intense. The only problem was I was only 2 cm dilated at that point and the guy that administers the epidural had a c-section he needed to attend that was going to last an hour. They basically told me it was a now or wait situation. My contractions were about 3 to 4 minutes apart and hurt a lot but in my drug-induced state I convinced myself I could handle an hour's wait. DH later told me that I didn't get my epidural until about 2 pm - a lot longer than just an hour's wait!
My OB came back by around 4:30 pm. By then I was 3 cm dilated, maybe 4 cm if she pushed it. She strongly suggested a c-section and I was in agreement - little Abby's head just wasn't descending and now that she's born you can see an indentation on her head where she was stuck in my pelvis.
They prepped me for the c-section and everything happened so fast. DH said that things went really quick and before he knew it they were pulling Abby from my belly and at 6:01 pm on March 22nd, we celebrated her birthday. They quickly took Abby to the little station, which was within my visibility. I told DH to go be with her and to cut the cord and have the nurses take pictures. I absolutely lost it when I heard her cries and saw her little fingers wrap themselves on DH's finger.
Then things got a little scary for me as I suddenly felt numb in areas that weren't supposed to feel numb. My fingers, arms and shoulders went numb and I started to panic. DH had come to check on me and I told him to tell the anesthesiologist that I felt claustrophobic. DH turned to tell him but he was already on top of it. DH said that was the only time he was scared in the OR because my BP had dropped drastically and he said I said, "I need to get out of here".
They wheeled me into recovery but I was shaking severely and was still completely numb everywhere but my head. The nurses helped get Abby to my breast but I couldn't hold her or support her head. That's the biggest thing I regret.
All complications aside, she is the love of my life and I am so incredibly blessed. Here's a few pictures of Abby from a photo session the hospital offered in our room Saturday morning:
And here's her delivery:
Re: Intro & Birth Story for Abigail Elyse
It went well. She's up to 6 lbs 13 oz, which is more than she weighed when she left the hospital. This gave me the confidence to try and breast feed again instead of pumping. The only problem is her latch went from pretty good to apparently bad as my right nipple is bleeding. So yet another wrench in the breast feeding department. I think I'll call the LC today to discuss ideas. I can't continue to be upset over this.
How is that cutie pie Ivy doing these days?
