I posted a couple of weeks ago that we got a surprise BFP (after it took 15 mos to conceive DS), and my concerns about epilepsy meds I was taking that may cause birth defects.
Well, I contacted my neurologist, and had a HORRIBLE experience. First, she never returned my call. Then, almost a week and several messages later, I finally was able to speak with a nurse. Then nurse told me that my Dr refused to change my meds to something less dangerous to my baby. And when I got upset (not yelling or cursing, just crying. I'm hormonal, ok? lol) she told me to grow up and hung up on me. THEN after I reported her to HR (AKA my BIL), my neuro finally called me back. She insisted on putting me on a med that was not covered by my insurance, and would cost me $367 a month! When I told her that wasn't possible for me, she told me to look into finding a new Dr.
So I did. And he has been amazing! He put me on a new medication that has a much lower chance of birth defects, and also on a very large dose of folic acid to try to prevent them. AND he gave me enough samples to last 4 months! He also informed me that the super expensive med my former neuro wanted to put me on is one of the worst for birth defects.
I had an u/s on Monday, and we saw the heartbeat! I'm feeling pretty run down and crappy but I guess that's to be expected. It's finally setting in, that this is really happening, and we are so excited! November can't get here soon enough!
Thanks for all the well wishes and support in my previous post!
Re: Update to my surprise BFP post
DD #2 - 03.13
Do you mind shooting me a pm with your new ones info and where he is located? My moms just moved, again, and she's thinking of switching.

Thanks, everyone!
Lari - My BIL is one of the heads of HR for this particular hospital network. Not only has the nurse been written up, and facing suspension, but he has already reported the dr. to the state review board. And all of the phone calls are recorded, so I have plenty to back me up.
It's so frustrating because this is the neurologist that initially diagnosed me in 2009, and I felt so comfortable with her that I followed her to her new practice that is over an hour from where I live. I don't know if her attitude changed because of the incident with the nurse, or what, but I am still shocked at the way she handled everything.

Ditto. And I'm glad you found a new doc.
That's great that you found a new doctor you love and were able to change your meds.
The first doctor is unbelievable! I can't believe she told you to grow up, that's horrible.

It sounds like we are on the same med. My neurologist said it's the best one for pregnancy and my OB said it's fine for BF too. I'm also on a ton of folic acid because there is an increased risk of cleft palate with the medication.
I'm glad you found a great neurologist!
