1st Trimester

Confused about U/S

The date in my ticker is the date I was given by my OBGYN based on my last menstrual cycle. I got a BFP at exactly 4 weeks, and my 1st appt was at 4 weeks, 4 days.

At the u/s today, the tech said "looks right about 6 weeks" and we saw a heartbeat (which Ive been told doesn't start until right around 6 weeks). Then when I was leaving, she said "OK, your due date is November 27th." I was confused, and said "I thought if I am 6 weeks, it should be more like Nov 18th." She said no,that I wasn't even 5 weeks yet.

HUH? How did we see the heartbeat if I am that early? This would also mean I was only about 2 1/2 weeks when I got a positive test. Thats not even possible is it?  And why was she saying 6 weeks while looking at everything, and then changed afterwards?

WDYT? I would show you a pic, but she wouldn't print one for me because "There isn't much to see yet anyway." :(

That sounds very odd. I don't know about the heart beat showing up early, but if she said it looked like you were 6 weeks, and then you were only 4.... I would have asked a lot more questions. Sounds like someone was really preoccupied! If you've got a decent doctor, they'll base your date on the ultrasound and not LMP if it's really that far off.

Find out for sure! Dates are so important when the end of your pregnancy comes.

Edit: Just re-read... the ultrasound AND your LMP are both pointing to you being 6 weeks? I think your doctor is being dumb then and didn't remember what he had just seen. Go by 6 weeks!

  • Did you ask? What did she say?

  • I did ask, and she blew me off. It wasn't my Dr doing the u/s. I had to go to the hospital because my OB doesn't have the equipment to do transvaginal in office.

When I asked she told me that no, I was only 4 weeks. And when I asked her why she said 6 before, and why we were able to see the heartbeat, she replied "Well thats what the machine says." :/

I will definitely be calling my OB tomorrow.

  • Forgot to add: Not only was there a heartbeat, but you could see the shape of the baby...little arm and legs stubs, big head. At 4 weeks its still just a mass of cells, right?

Definitely call your OB. She is crazy. 4 weeks from conception perhaps, but most certainly 6 weeks pregnant. There is no heart beat at 4 weeks. I'd keep operating under the assumption of the due date you anticipated. How frustrating. Sorry to hear about that awful visit.

  • Yeah hb doesn't start until sometime in the 5th or sometimes even 6th week.  My Dr. warned me that we might not see it today and we did.

Forgot to say that yes, at 4 weeks it is pretty much just a mass of cells.  Definitely no hb or baby shaped figure!

Yeah, she's totally off. No way all that would be going on at only 4 weeks. I wonder if she means 4 weeks since conception. Hopefully your OB can clear things up.

Unless they have a very good machine, seems weird they would even see that much. My u/s at 6w5d had no limbs and no defined head. Just a peanut shaped figure.
