1st Trimester

When to be worried (spotting)?

I was released from my RE last Wednesday and have my first OB appointment scheduled for April 4.  I've had spotting on and off since even before we got our BFP.  The RE has reassured me a million times that unless I'm filling a pad in an hour, it's completely normal.  We've seen the baby, heard the HB and everything has been great so far (I'm 8.5 weekish).  Last Wednesday, the spotting completely disappeared.  I was so relieved.  Well of course, today, I'm spotting again.  So far it's just pink (pretty bright/dark pink) and there is some dripping when I go to the bathroom (sorry TMI).  Nothing really accumulating on a pad (yet).  No cramping either.  We did a lot of walking around yesterday all day so maybe that's the culprit?

I called the RE and left a message to get their thoughts but I might not hear until tomorrow.  I guess, I'm just curious in case something takes a turn for the worse tonight...do I ever go to the ER?  I know that there is really nothing you can do once you m/c, so is going to the ER necessary?  Or do I just call the doctor the next day?  I know the ER can do a u/s to make sure everything is still ok, but I don't think they can really do much else?

I just hate all of this worry.  I get so excited and feel like everything is going great, and then I get hit with something else.

Thanks for your help ladies!

  • I was told go to.the ER if I was filling more than a pad an hour, as you may be losing too much blood. Other than that the ER can't do anything to help, just provide reassurance if everything is okay. My RE said the ER can actually freak you out more, since their equipment isn't as good, and drs aren't as trained in fertility/OB. I hope your spotting is nothing....it is so darn scary.

  • I had spotting at 5 weeks and went to the ER, it was bright red. They really couldn't tell me anything except that it was an interuterine pregnancy and my cervix was closed and that all of that was a good sign. I had spotting again at 7 weeks and didn't do anything. At 8 weeks I had spotting and SEVERE cramping. I called my dr's on call line and she told me to meet her at the office. The baby looked perfect so they put me on prometrium until I start weaning off at 13 weeks.

They don't know why I spotted or if anything was wrong.

I hope that everything is ok for you and that it's nothing, I know it's really scary!

^ what she said!  The only way you'll need to go to an ER is if you are bleeding through a pad an hour or are in excruciating pain! Since you have already seen the baby and hb your chance of m/c goes down to like 3% and spotting is completely normal.  That being said it is always a good thing to mention any sort of spotting to your Dr, which you have.

  • Has anyone checked your progesterone?  Low progesterone is why I was spotting.
