When to ask for Zofran?

I am hoping someone can offer their wisdom here...

at what point do you call in for Zofran? I'm nauseous often but only vomit about 3 times a week.

Re: When to ask for Zofran?

  • I called today. Mine is to where I dont want to get out of bed bc if i move, I will throw up. It will be ready for me to pick up after work. With my ds#1 it wasnt bad so my doctor told me that it means everything is healthy. I guess if its to where you cant handle it, call Good Luck

oof that's awful, I am so sorry. I am certainly not there yet - it's actually worse AFTER breakfast.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Ok, so I would certainly speak with your doctor about this before taking advice from anyone! But my opinion would be to only use Zofran as a last resource. A sick mommy means a healthy baby. When I carried my first child it was 18 years ago but I was so sick I stayed in bed for days at a time and found that I could only eat cold fresh fruit. So for the first 6 weeks of pregnancy. I ate cold fresh fruit and drank cold fresh fruit juice. This got me through until I hit 12.5 weeks and then the nausea eased up and I was able to work on a more normal diet. Find what you can tolerate and have that as much as you can. Then once you are past your really sick stage, start working on putting healthy rounded meals into play. Don't worry mommy, it gets better and it's all for the love of your little one! You can do it! It's what us mom's do best - We sacrifice for our little ones!  - Let me hear your mommy roar! • I got it already. I don't know the normal protocol for getting a Rx but it helps having a husband who is a pharmacist. He called my doc and she called it in and he filled it immediately and brought it home. I haven't thrown up at all but was nauseous ALL DAY LONG. It helps but it's not a miracle worker. With my first pregnancy I had moments but never needed medicine.

  • I started taking it around 12 weeks or so... but I ONLY took it as a total last resort... Zofran's biggest side effect is constipation.... I'd rather be a little queezy rather than constipated... IMO anyways lol

I took Unisom at night... helps you get better sleep and helps nausea (it was actually originally prescribed as an anti-nausea medication, but its biggest side effect was severe drowsiness, so then they started to market it as an OTC sleep aide)

GL, hope you start feeling better soon!

  • My doctor suggested only using it if you can't keep fluids down or are throwing up so much you can't keep any food at all down for days. I throw up every day 2 times or so, but I can keep fluids down and have gotten plenty of calories in so at this point my doctor and I don't feel it's necessary.

  • I was prescribed Zofran when it got to the point that I was vomiting at work and the nausea was so bad it interfered with my day to day and work activities.

I'm sorry but I couldn't/can't stay in bed for days at at time like the one PP stated.  I have a toddler and I have a job (where I'm in and out of the office, visiting clients in their homes, etc) that depend on me.  My hubby is amazing and does a ton with our LO and around the house but he can't go to work for me...lol

Talk with your provider about your concerns/problems.  Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different.  My m/s lasted through 16 weeks with my first but wasn't this severe.  I will be thankful if this time it's gone in the next week or so.

this is me. Staying home and resting every time I feel sick is a non-option. I'd lose my job, insurance, etc.

  • Its not quite the mircle you may be looking for: many are still nauseous but it just keeps them from throwing up.

Some docs say until you cant function then try to "tough it out" and use the old wive tales tricks (eating often, ginger...). Its not fun but you dont sound that bad.

I got it very early (5 wks) but only because I was vomiting so much that I wasnt keeping fluids down. And on high doses I still throw up at least once a day for 12 wks, dry heaved multliple times every day, and was one the couch nauseous all day. (someone had to come watch DS it was that bad.) But i was able to keep fluids and a few starchy foods down -so i wasnt in the hospital or on a pic line
