I took my little one to the doctor today because she was coughing really bad this morning and he examined her and said she has croup which is a coughing virus that last aorund 5 days. I feel so horrible for baby. The coughing is usually only at night and in the morning, throughout the day she is a happy girl. I have to give her medecine for 3 days and hope that it gets bettter by then. Has anyone heard of croup before? Any feedback?
Thanks..a scared and worried mommy.
Re: Baby has Croup
My LO had the croup about a month ago. It came on suddenly, and at night. It required an ER visit. He got one dose and the cough was much better almost immediately. Our recommendations were: keep the room cool, use the humidifier and tilt the mattress. He was much better the next day and took about week to get back to normal. It will be ok!
Our first, DS, got croup from about 6 months on (still does on occasion and he is 2). We always had to do the steamy shower for 15-20 mins (fill up the bathroom with steam- it is awful for the mildew, but totally helps) then take them outside (or to what area has cool air like in front of the fridge) for about 5 mins. Croup is when the airway is constricted and can be very serious, but some kids will just have the barky cough. If LO looks like they are struggling for air (stridor), it is the more serious type. Our DS has chronic croup, so the shower method works (never had stridor). Like PP said, prop the mattress and use a humidifier as well. Make sure if you have a very little one, that you crack the door to the shower a bit, because they can overheat easily. Just make sure they get a few inhales of that steamy air, and it should help. There are also breathing treatments out there that can be used if your LO has chronic problems.
Sorry you have to go through that. Croup almost always strikes at night. We usually were up from about 2 am on.
