TTC After a Loss

When is the right time to see a specialist?

Today is CD 7, should be ovulating in 4 days - but as always, will start with my OPK's from tomorrow CD 8.

DH went for a S/A last week as suggested by our GP - got his results back and they are not good.  He scored low in all areas - count, motility and morphology.

So now, I have to wonder, is it too early to go for further testing?  Do we continue to try for "6 months" on our own?  That seems to be the rule of thumb.

We got PG on our 2nd attempt in July, had the M/C in August - then waited 2 cycles as instructed before beginning to try again - which is now.  This cycle will be our 3rd attempt.

DH thinks his results could be the reason behind the M/C....

Any thoughts?

Re: When is the right time to see a specialist?

  • I don't know much about m/c and low numbers, although I have heard inklings about them possibly being related. My DH has low morph. We have gotten PG twice on our own and both times we had a m/c......but I also have PCOS. The only time we had a successful PG was when we did treatments.

I HIGHLY recommend you see an RE (fertility specialist.....) now. With low count, motility and morphology there is absolutely no reason for you to wait. The RE will probably want your DH to do another SA at his/her own office.....but with results like yours, you should have no problem being seen now....if there is a known problem then the rule of thumb goes out the window.....

  • How old are you?  Either way, I would go.  We have an RE appt on Tuesday, and we are "only" on our 4th cycle actively trying.  DH did a SA today, but we don't know those results yet.  I have long cycles and am on Clomid, so that is why I'm going.

It can't hurt to have a consultation!  If they say...'try for 3 months then come back', then atleast you'll know!

  • I am 36, turning 37 in December.  DH is 37.  My cycles are regular (27 days) and O is regular as per the OPK's (always day 11).

With his results, we are now thinking we will need assistance for sure - but then again, we were already PG once - so it isn't impossible - but then again, perhaps his results explain the m/c.  No way to know on that I guess.  With our ages, they give 6 months as the guideline.

I totally want to go as soon as we can get in to see an RE - I just don't want to feel stupid if they ask for how long we have been trying and we say just 3 months... but I feel that with his results, we should investigate further, do an SA test again and go from there.  If we are going to need assistance, I prefer to know now.  This way, we can continue to try on our own, but actively read up on what may be ahead for us.

  • Go for more testing. You say that based on your age and your husbands results you need help. I don't believe in this you have to wait a certain time. Lie if you want, say we have been trying for 6 months if you think that is the only way they will help you.
  • You may want another SA.  My DH's first showed a lot of problems, but then they had him go to a different lab that is a bit more modern, and the SA came out completely fine.

I have never heard of a link b/w sperm issues and m/c.  I feel that if you got pregnant, the sperm did it's job (in terms of motility, morphology, etc. - not genes inside the sperm).

I went to an RE after 6 months of trying b/c of PCOS.  My only regret is I waited that long!

  • Thanks for your feedback - DH said the same to me, that he should get another SA because the first one might not be an accurate reading.  So we have an appointment booked with an FE for later this month.  Will have another SA done, as well as other tests.  In the meantime, we keep trying.

I feel the same way - if I was already pregnant once, than obviously even with the low scores in all areas, he still has some good ones in there somewhere! :)
