Bloodwork

Well that was fun...

DD needed her normal 9 month blookwork (iron and lead).  And the GI requested a celiac and thyroid panel and she also needed allergy testing done.

We had to go to a Quest and it was a PITA.  First they were shocked at all the bloodwork she needed, but our GI and primary both agreed that it would be best to do it all at the same time.

Then the tech keeps saying "There's nothing wrong with you, your just tiny, it's ok to be tiny..."

No it's not ok, my child only grew an inch and a half in FIVE months, she has a milk intolerance, as well as a few signs that point to a possible thyroid issue.  If it's not resolved it can seriously affect her development....

And they couldn't get all the blood they needed so we need to go back.......

Sorry for my rant, but if your not a doctor - and not my daughters doctor - keep your opinion to yourself

Re: Bloodwork

  • She was probably just trying to make you feel better...and make you feel less worried.

Maybe she was I don't know.  I just never have found those places to have good bedside manner.  The tech was just acting like all this was unnecessary, and she has no idea what's going on.

And DD was awesome cried for a second then sat there while they tried to fill the vials up.

Yes  I do know though, that when you're already concerned, minimizing the severity of the situation certainly doesn't help. I hate to say that people who haven't dealt with it personally may not understand, but it's probably true. It's not like the techs know what's going on specifically with the patients, they just know the panels they need, but still, if there's an order for those tests, there's a reason, and they shouldn't try to downplay it.

  • Im sorry. *HUGS*

When we met with the GI about Avery's MSPI the doc pretty much dismissed us. They kept saying he is healthy, his weight is good, etc. I knew something was wrong and it bugged me. As much as they were probably trying to comfort, it really doesnt make you feel better.

i agree.  it sounds like she was just trying to be nice.  i'm glad your LO was calm through the bloodwork though.  my dd had her 9-month bloodwork done today too.  i was so upset that i couldn't even go into the room with her.  dh went with her (he doesn't have the needle phobia like me), and dd did fine.  hardly cried at all.

anyway, hope the bloodwork gives you some answers to get your LO on the right track!

  • I'm sure she was just trying to be nice and give you some reassurance.  I know they see test happy doctors push unneeded tests on children all the time just because they're on the smaller side of things...my niece was one of them.

I hope they get to the bottom of all of this soon.
