When to increase ounces in bottle?

Hi!

My son is 5 weeks old.  Right now, he is taking 4 ounces every 3-4 hours.  However, lately it seems like he wants more.  Is it too soon to start giving him 5 ounces?  I don't want to overfeed him.

TIA!

  • I can't really remember how much DS was taking at that age.  But if he seems like he wants more, he probably does.  I would start offering 5oz and see if he drinks it all.

  • there is no such thing as overfeeding.

if he is still hungry,  give him more.  there is no "schedule" of when you should increase the amount they get.  THEY decide when they want more.  every baby is different.

  • He might be going through a growth spurt.  DD was taking 5+ oz for a few days at each feeding when she was about 6w old.  Now she's back down to 3-4 oz at each feeding.

  • I was just going to say that he could want more now and in a few weeks hardly touch it...but have more ready to offer just in case....
  • My pedi said to increase in 1/2 oz increments.  But to be honest, I did it in 1 oz increments, and (I think...lol) my baby is fine!  I agree with PP, I don't think you can overfeed.  If your baby takes the amount you give and seems satisfied (and isn't spitting it up or getting sick from it), I think it's fine.  Good luck! : )
