Babies: 6 - 9 Months

LO Eating at night

My DD is almost 7 months old and she is still in the habit of BFing twice during the night.  She doesn't always eat a lot, but she wakes up and wants to eat.  She gets solids twice during the day, and gets bf 6 times a day.  My question is, do you think the night eating will go away by itself or shoudl we look into night weaning? I think she is just in the habit of getting those night feedings so she doesn't tank up during the day as much as she could, but I obviously don't want to night wean if she needs to eat that much.

  • My DS is 7 months old and still wakes up two times per night for a bottle of formula.  The Pedi said we should really try to cut out the night feedings, but he's legitimately hungry.  When he wakes up, he won't go back to sleep well until we give him a bottle, which he finishes dry.  So, I keep feeding him.  I figure as he starts to eat more solids, he'll hopefully want to eat less at night.

  • DS is 7.5 months old & was STTN pretty consistently for about a month. Then he started teething & got a cold. We had two weeks where he woke up every night at 11PM & then again at 1:45AM on the dot. Despite knowing he was not hungry, I just fed him anyways. I knew the kid was feeling bad & it was probably just for comfort sake, but now that he's over his cold & his two bottom teeth are in he started STTN again. I have NEVER pushed him to STTN & he did start doing it on his own both times. If it were me, I would feed her, but you have to do what is best for your family. If you want to try to wean nighttime feedings then I say go for it! They are supposedly old enough to STTN beyond 6 months. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • I'm kind of in the same boat.  We used the sleepeasy method to help our son sleep better, and it's worked like magic... BUT... he still wakes to eat twice at night.

I know it's easy for them to get into the habit of waking and eating, so I'm trying to experiment.  Last night I didn't feed him until 5am (9 hrs from nursing before bed.. plus 2 wakeups where he put himself back to sleep)... at 5 I was painfully engorged and he was starving.  I felt like he was legitimately hungry and would never make it the 12 hours I hear babies do... Maybe it's b/c I BF instead of formula?  But a PP said she's experiencing the same thing bottle feeding, so maybe not!  This stuff is impossible to figure out!

I think i'm going to feed him solids three times today, and, depending on how I feel, I may also dreamfeed him tonight.

    Good luck!

  • DD still eats 2 times at night.  It was 3 or more, but she does better now that we're giving her a 3rd meal closer to bedtime.
