1st Trimester

Wish I hadn't had an early u/s (sorry longish)

I am currently pregnant, (approx 6 weeks since LMP) and I had an u/s yesterday. I measured a week behind at 5 weeks, 1 day. Had the vaginal u/s and only saw a gestational sac. The u/s tech said it might not be a big deal but she checked with the midwife and I had blood work drawn and scheduled a 2nd u/s. The nurse who did the blood work said she'd call today with beta results (and I'll go back on Thursday for more blood work.)

So the nurse just calls.

HER:Because we didn't see a yolk sac, etc the doctor wants to schedule a follow up u/s in 4 weeks.

ME: UMM I scheduled a follow up u/s for TWO weeks yesterday. I thought you might be calling with my beta numbers.

She seems a little confused.

HER:"Oh no. That's not why I'm calling. I just wanted to confirm that you scheduled a follow up."

ME: So do you have my Beta #'s

HER: Yes. 20934.

I wish I had never had the first u/s. Or even made a doctor appointment before 8 weeks. I'm driving myself crazy (with the help of my doctor's office.)

  • As hard as it is to wait 4 weeks you'll have a better chance of seeing the baby if you wait longer than 2 weeks.  I had my first u/s at when I thought it was 8 weeks along and the baby was measuring 7w 1d so they moved my due date back.  You couldn't see much but thankfully we did see the heartbeat.  I know it's super hard waiting but it's better for the baby to be farther along so you can actually see more during the ultrasound.  Just my 2 cents :) Stay strong....I always remind myself that what will happen will happen no matter if I worry or not.  Just take care of yourself!

  • My beta #s were really high with DS - like, always in the upper average range for TRIPLETS.  There was just one baby, though.  Ultimately, beta numbers by themselves mean nothing - it's the rate of increase/doubling time that matter.  And at the point you're at, it's not going to double in 48 hours, or even 96 hours, so don't freak out if they tell you that it's only 25000 or something on Thursday and seem concerned that it didn't double.  You probably just ovulated later than day 14 this month & have your dates off a little bit.

  • Like one of the PP's said, try to hold out for the 4 weeks. A lot of OB's, mine included won't even do an US until at least 7 weeks because you really only see the gestational sac at that point and it can cause a lot of worry for no reason.

If you wait, you'll get to see a better picture and probably hear the heartbeat.
