1st Trimester

Dental Work

A few years ago I had my first root canal and this fall I was at the dentist getting my teeth cleaned and the dentist said I needed to start thinking about getting a crown put on that tooth...of course I held off because that tooth wasn't bothering me but now it's starting to ache! Does anyone know if it is safe to have a crown done while pregnant? I've never had a crown and I've never been pregnant before! Ha! Help?

  • Yuck!  That really stinks!  I had a root canal several years ago and had a cap put on the tooth a few years back.  It is best to ask your doctor about it.  Since the tooth is dead, you shouldn't need anything for the pain, but they do use a cement for the temporary and then to ultimately put the permanent on.  Also, they will have to use something to mold your tooth.  I am not sure if you ever had braces or a retainer, but it is the same type of stuff.  I believe it is better to have dental work done in the 2nd trimester if you feel like you can not wait till after birth.  Good luck with the crown!

I had a crown fitted in second tri with no problems. Just had the perm one put on this past Thursday. You might want to wait til your in 2nd tri but you should be good. I had no issues arise and my OB was fine with it.

  • I am around 7 weeks and went to the dentist yesterday for a filling. The dentist wouldn't do it because of the risk to the baby from side effects from the Novocain. He said that it was risky doing anything while the organs  are developing. I have to deal with the pain until the second trimester to be on the safe side.  If I was in your situation I would talk to my OB and my dentist about it. Good luck!
