Layette on the registry, clothing size question

So I know it's a good idea to have some clothing on the registry.  Mostly I'm seeing 4-8 bodysuits long and short sleeved, 1-2 wearable blankets, 2-4 gowns, 4-8 footies, 4-6 tees, and 4-8 pairs of pants.  My question is what size should all this stuff be?  Should I register for a mixture of sizes?  How fast do they grow out of the 0-3 or 3-6? Do i bother with newborn sizes or just maybe have an outfit or two?

  • Honestly, don't register for clothes.  People will buy you plenty on their own, because it is fun to pick out cute outfits.

  • I just had my shower and didnt register for clothes but I got tons! Most were 0-3 months and more cute stuff than the pjs and onesies. I bought way I felt I needed after once I sorted everything out. You can also exchange on sizes too.

  • I wouldn't register for clothes except maybe some plain white onesies. People love to pick out baby clothes themselves and they'll buy you whatever they want. Also, clothing is seasonal, so whatever you register for now may not even be available when people are shopping for you.

  • I just 2 packs of plain white onesies in each size up to 9months.

I'm going with the idea that if someone wants to buy clothes, it's because they want the fun of picking them out, and plain white onesies will come in handy either way.

I agree!!  I didn't register for any clothing and DD's closet was full after my shower.  If you're going to register for clothing, yes, it is a good idea to have varying sizes, but think about when you're due and what the weather is typically like in your area - don't ask for clothes in size 6-9 months if it's going to be wintertime when baby will be wearing that size.

  • I agree with everyone about not needing to register for clothes because people will buy it anyways.  But it won't hurt to have it on there! Honestly, how long your baby stays in each size is really going to vary.  My daughter fit in the sizes for pretty much the exact avg amount of time.  Her sizes always coordinated with how old she was.  My SIL has a baby who is 6 months old (perfectly healthy) but still can wear a size 3 months.  Just resist the urge to prewash everything and keep tags on them until you need them!

  • If you want to register for some sleeping gowns/wearable blankets or something like that so people know you want that sort of thing -- I did that. Other than that I'm sure you will get bombarded with clothes!
