Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Amoxicillin diapers??

DD had an ear infection last week so she started on Amoxicillin. She was on it once around 3-4 months, had bad diarrhea that day so the doc took her off because it was only for a possible secondary infection.

Now at 8 months the diapers are horrible, 3+ runny, messy explosion types a day. I called the nurse to see if I should finish out the amoxicillin and she said yes and to just use warm clothes instead of wipes and Vaseline for protection. Luckily DD is not having any rash issues, but I was suprised that they consider this normal even when I said she had 5 diapers like this yesterday.

Anyone else?

Re: Amoxicillin diapers??

  • DD had a terrible experience with amoxicillin. She had diarrhea for 7days all day. So the next time she needed antibiotics they gave us something different and it was so much better.

  • It's normal for antibiotics to upset their stomachs. I'm surprised your pedi didn't suggest giving her some probiotics to help offset some of those issues. We used Culturelle for kids and gave it in her bottles before her doses. But the next time we needed antibiotics, they prescribed cefdinir and that has been much easier on her.

  • DS is on amoxicillin right now and our pedi told us to give him Culturelle once a day. We bought the kind in the capsules and just dump the powder in his food. He hasn't had any issues.

  • I second the Culturelle (probiotics). My oldest DD takes them every day because she was hospitalized for c. Diff at around 1 yr old. I get really nervous about diarrhea caused by antibiotics now.

This sounds normal, as long as there are frequent wet diapers (to rule out dehydration), you should all be ok. We did probiotics both times and I think that is really important!

The ped did mention yogurt might help. Does anyone know if the gerber kind has probiotics?

  • All yogurt has probiotics. If you are giving cereal, the Happy Baby brand cereals also have probiotics. DD had bad diarrhea on amox as well. 5-8 poops a day, and it lasted until 3 days after we finished the amox. Don't know if the cereal helped her or not since this was her first time on antibiotics.
