Cloth Diapering

Organization help?

Warning: This is long

How are do you organize your CDs? I have a changing table with three drawers, and then some canvas bins on the book shelf that I can use if I need to. I'm also ordering a few cube wall shelves to hang above the table. (The top of the table has NO ROOM for anything other than the changing pad, and I want to make sure one drawer of the table (the bottom probably) can be reserved for changing pad covers, sheets, etc.)

I'm THINKING that the cloth wipes will go in the cubes above the table so they're easy to reach...along with the solution, and other small things I can fit up there, like snappies. I'm stumped on the drawers though. I'm not sure if I want to store the pockets all ready stuffed, or if I want to stuff them as I use them and store the inserts somewhere else...and then there are prefolds..covers..all in ones. Its stressing me out!

Right now in one of the drawers, I have 18 prefolds, 4 covers, 10 pockets, 20 inserts, and three all in ones and its fitting fine with extra room...so the drawers are spacious. I'd love to figure out a way to separate the kinds so that its a little easier on DH to know what he's going for...but then again I thought about sectioning off a certain area of "daddy diapers" so that he's confident in what he's doing...

But...then I also thought maybe I could stuff pockets as I finish laundering them and then storing them, and our all in ones in one drawer together..and then have the fitteds, prefolds, and covers all in another together?

How would you handle this with the space we've got?

Our stash, though not complete, will be about 25 pockets, 10 AIOs, 60 prefolds (different sizes), 14 covers, and about 10 fitteds. Eventually we'll settle on one or two specific kinds and alter our stash, but this is what we're going for for when LO arrives.

  • I use 2 drawers (one of them is in the nightstand in his room). I pre-stuff all my pocket diapers. You'll probably want to do that as well. Nothing like a squirmy baby while you're trying to stuff a diaper. Not so much an issue with a newborn, but definitely around 4 months or so when they want to get into everything. I usually do a pile of prefolds, with covers right next to it. Then I have all my pockets sitting up in rows across the drawer. My fitteds go next to my prefold pile. All my extra inserts, wet bags and pail liners go in the night stand drawer. I don't have cloth wipes, but I would imagine you'd want those in a tub or bin or whatnot, next to the changing area, so probably on those shelves you were mentioning. My snappis and butt cream go right next to the changing pad (again on the shelves for you). Seems to work for us.

I'm glad you seem to agree with what I was thinking. I think just typing out this post helped me a lot. haha

  • The wipes, etc all within reach is a good thing.  I, too, think you'll want to stuff your pockets.  Also if you get cramped for space in your drawer you won't need to keep the full size inserts in there for some time.  For ex. I keep my newborn inserts that came with the pockets in a hanging organizer in his closet because I really don't ever use them.  I also keep extra sheets, receiving blankets, changing pad covers, pnp sheets, etc in that hanging organizer.  Other than that I'm no help because we don't use prefolds/covers!

  • I would suggest putting the diapers you are going to be using right away within easy reach.  All your newborn prefolds, covers, pockets, AIOs, etc. should take priority for the easy to reach places.  You can always rotate in the bigger diapers as your baby grows and as you refine your stash.  Using one of your cubes for your wipes, rash cream, snappies, etc also sounds like a good idea.  Those are mostly accessories you'll need the entire time you CD.

If you have the time, prestuffing pockets does save time.  DS is a month and a half, and even though he's not going anywhere, he does get frustrated waiting for me to stuff a pocket while sitting in a wet diaper on the table.

  • We only have 26 BG 4.0s and we prestuff them. This was our changing table from IKEA:

We stored wipes, wipes solution, diaper rash cream, hemp liners, and toys in the side pockets and diapers on the bottom shelf. Now that we don't use the changing table anymore, I bought a hanging canvas organizer from Target for storing everything and that's perfect.

  • I responded to a post a few days ago with pics of my CD storage- here's the link:

I would definitely recommend pre-stuffing the pockets.  I'd also keep wipes, snappis, etc in baskets whithin easy reach.  Then, keep prefolds, fitteds, covers and extra inserts in one drawer and pockets and AIOs in another drawer.  If your DH doesn't want to mess with PFs and fitteds, just tell him to pick from the drawer with pockets and AIOs.

I'd also recommend setting aside diapers that don't currently fit your LO to make things easier for your H.  I had all my OS diapers in a separate drawer during the NB stage, and I used the bigger PFs as burp cloths until they fit.

I'm stumped on the drawers though. I'm not sure if I want to store the pockets all ready stuffed, Stuff them out of the laundry, trust me it will make things much easier for you and your husband at the changing table. and then there are prefolds..covers..all in ones.
Store the AIO and Pockets next to eachother, because when you are changing either one of these it is the "same" process and it will make things easier on your husband.   Are both of you going to use the prefolds or just you? (my husband refused to use them.

In the top drawer I would put your stuffed pockets and AIO, then put in a divider of some sorts , (I made one out of cardboard - think inverted T I glued two pieces of card board together with 4 inches unglued at the bottom then folded those outward to make an upside down T.  It stays really well) and put the prefolds and covers in the current size we were using in the other side.  Then you would have your daddy's diapers space and your prefolds available in the top drawer.

Oh, I just noticed you had fitteds also, are you planning on using them for overnight, if so, I'd put those in the second drawer if you don't have room in the top drawer for them.  You could always make a third divider for them.

I'd put the stuff you are not using immediately, (larger sized covers/prefolds in drawer #2

But...then I also thought maybe I could stuff pockets as I finish laundering them and then storing them, and our all in ones in one drawer together.do this .and then have the fitteds, prefolds, and covers all in another together?  If your drawers are big enough, use the divider drawer I mentioned above and try and keep the stuff you are using daily in the top drawer.

Our stash, though not complete, will be about 25 pockets, 10 AIOs, 60 prefolds (different sizes), 14 covers, and about 10 fitteds. Eventually we'll settle on one or two specific kinds and alter our stash, but this is what we're going for for when LO arrives. Just read this, your One sized diapers will most likely NOT fit your newborn.  Did you buy sized AIO's or some of the one sized all in ones.  Put everything in the top drawer that you will be using on a daily basis, then all the rest in the second drawer. Rotate out as necessary.
