Pregnant after IF

IVF and PGD

Hi ladies,

Not sure where to post this...DS was conceived naturally. Since then I've had 2 m/c, the second at 17 weeks. It appears it's age related and RE thinks ivf with pgd will give us the best odds of a healthy baby. Unfortunately insurance requires 3 cycles of iui before going to ivf.  I'm nervous if the iui takes, I'm still likely to have a m/c due to my 'bad/old' eggs. RE is going to try to appeal with my insurance, but in the meantime it feels like Russian roulette.  Anyone else faced with this?

Re: IVF and PGD

  • My insurance had the same requirement- 3 IUIs before IVF approval. We were unexplained with a prior unexplained loss (with a TI cycle), so there was no clinical reason to go straight to IVF. However, I was told that my insurance would throw out the IUI requirement if the RE made a medical rec to go straight to IVF. The example that was given to me was "blocked tubes," so I'm not sure about PGD. But, I think it is worth a shot.

Best of luck with your decision and your cycle!

  • My insurance also requires to attempt all lesser means but with 4 unexplained m/c my RE recommended going straight to IVF with PGD and ICSI. He wrote a letter to insurance and they agreed. They even payed for ICSI which they usually don't. My husband first semen analysis came out normal but the insurance wanted a more recent one, even though he had done it a month earlier, and the shape was just slightly off. But PGD was out of pocket $4,500. Btw the insurance responded to the appeal in less than a week.

  • My insurance requires the 3 IUI's as well, but my RE fought it and won because I have blocked tubes so I was able to go straight to IVF. Dealing with the insurance company was more stressful than IVF!
