Godparents

Anyone have a cute idea for asking someone to be LO's godparent? More specifically to be the godmother?

I plan on asking my best friend and was hoping to make it fun/cute.

Should add that for us the godparents will not be the legal guardian as we have already ste that up, the godparents would just be another special person in the babies life!

TIA!

Re: Godparents

  • Godparents are a Catholic tradition so I'm assuming you're Catholic.  If that's the case are you having the baby baptized?  If so maybe you can ask her then, might make it more special :)

  • Godparents are not only a Catholic tradition and I am not Catholic, I am Jewish and since we are having our boy circumsized and Godparents are part of the ceremony we need to ask them ahead of time since he will most likely be circumsized before we leave the hospital.

I also don't like to wait on things like this. I'm also going to be asking my best friend, and want to make it memorable for the both of us.

You are right, it originated as a Christian (or Catholic) tradition and I had no idea it had to do with non-Christianity...however, upon Googling... I have found the below:

    Judaism

There are two roles in the Jewish circumcision ceremony that are sometimes translated as godparent. The sandek holds the baby boy while he is circumcised. Among Orthodox Ashkenazi, the kvater (or kvaterin if female) is the person who takes the child from his mother and carries him into the room in which the circumcision is performed. Kvater is etymologically derived from the German Gevatter ("godfather").

That being said, OP, you should perhaps take your best friend out for a special dinner and if you're really that into making it a big-deal you could purchase some sort of commemorative item (perhaps an engraved bracelet, necklace or picture frame) that says Godmother or Kvaterin (depending upon how religious you are).
