2nd Trimester

Back hurts and I can't sleep

This is going to be a looooong four months! With Jack I never had any pain (except at the end). I also gained 50 lbs. with him, no weight gain from this one, yet. I'm not showing much so I wonder if she is hanging out closer to my back, that's why it hurts so much!

Re: Back hurts and I can't sleep

  • I've been awake since 2 am because my back hurt and I couldn't get comfortable.  It stinks!

  • Do you sleep with a pillow between your knees?

I find that it takes the pressure off my spine.

Also, prenatal yoga really stretches out your back and helps with sleep in general.

  • Tell me about it! lol! I haven't had a good nights sleep in over a month! The only thing I haven't tried is the Snoogle body pillow. Its kind of expensive, but I am almost at the point that spending 50 on a maternity pillow sounds like a good idea. I found that if I stuff a nice fluffy pillow under my back while I am on my side, and then turn just a little like I am going to lay on my back (but not all the way) it sort of tricks my lower back and hips into thinking Iam on my back and gives me a couple hours of relief and some sleep.

  • I am having the hardest time getting and staying asleep. Even if I'm dear tired I can't fall asleep. My husband has bought me two sleep pillows, the second one I love, but I just can't seem to sleep throughout the night.

This. Putting a pillow between my legs is the only way I can sleep.

  • Ditto for the pillow between the legs advice.  At 20 weeks I found I can only sleep on my side in a 3/4th position, half on my side, half belly.  It helps to have a really cushy mattress. Also, I find that it helps if my neck is supported, with the thickest part of the pillow at the base of my head and neck, not the other way around.  When I am sitting in a chair I recline so that my torso is thrust forward and my upper back is not slouched over. Even if you haven't gained a lot of weight, you may need a belly band. I found immediate relief when the weight of my stomach was supported.  And my final piece of advice..notice your posture when you look at your side profile in the mirror. If found, that I was leaning forward with my shoulders, probably because my lower back isn't strong enough yet to handle the extra weight.
  • Ugh right there with all of you! I have suffered from back problems for years and I knew with pregnancy it was going to get worse and it has. I cannot sleep. I used to take Ambien pre-pregnancy to help with the insomnia that my back pain would cause and now I'm out of luck with that. I have tried different pillows and putting a pillow between my legs. Nothing seems to help. I am asking my midwife on Thursday what I can do because the next 6 months are going to be extra long if I can't ever fall asleep!
