3rd Trimester

If you have had a 3/d 4/d ultrasound

Did you eat or drink something shortly before going in? We are getting one for fun this afternoon and I'm not sure if we will get more face shots if I have something that makes him active, or if too much movement is bad. I just am hoping he doesn't cover his face with his hands the whole time! I'm so curious to see if he's transverse or not too, I don't feel any movement near my ribs at all, but I am 6 feet tall so maybe he just still has lots of room in there?

  • We have one April 16th and I'm curious to the answers! The only thing they told us was to make sure to drink eight 8 oz glasses of water every day for the entire week prior.

Did they say why? I'm not sure I've done that, this week was crazy for me and I've felt dehydrated all week, too late now!

  • We had one the other day. I drank lemonade prior to but...it was my LO's normal sleeping pattern time so I was prepared for less movement.  There was movement but the main problem was LO did not want to move hands from face...and feet from face too! LOL We ended up getting some great shots and video though...smiling, laughing, eyes open, making kissy faces. But those HANDS!!! AHHHHH!

I had one at 12, 20, and 31 weeks (all the ultrasounds at my clinic are 3D).

I don't think it matters one way or another, but it's probably best to have an awake baby than a sleeping baby, unless the position is already camera ready. At 30 weeks the baby's head can be pretty low and it can be hard to get a good face shot. My DD was head down, face down the entire 31 week ultrasound. She was awake and moving, but her head stayed in the same position.

Maybe take something cold/sweet to drink with you so you can get the baby moving if necessary in the middle of the scan?

They said its because of the amniotic fluid surrounding LO. The more fluid you drink, the more fluid around them, the better the photos (they call it their "window to seeing LO" and if theres low fluid, theres less that they can see/less angles). It also helps with the clarity of the pictures. (The way I envision it is like a foggy or icy window in the winter. The fog/ice can be on all/part/none of the window).

I've heard that eating a small snack or drinking a glass of juice helps to let them get better photos - though I'm not sure I'd eat chocolate or orange juice because I'd be afraid that LO would go nutty and then they wouldn't be able to get ANY good photos. Maybe bring some chocolate with you (or see if they have some there for sleeping babies!).

  • We did one at 29w & didn't get many face shots, it that's because DD was head down and facing my spine, so we just couldn't get a good angle.  She slept thru most of it, which probably makes for better pictures.  You need to be well hydrated or the pictures will be grainy/fuzzy.  Just drink as much water as you can before the appointment.

  • I ate a sugary cereal right before so that LO could be awake and active.  It worked...in less than 1 min of seeing him during the exam he was smiling and giggling.  I was also talking to him during the exam which I think he recognized my voice.  I got some great images to take home.
  • I had one at 16 weeks and didn't do anything special before it.

eta: oh yeah, I also had a really short bit of 4D (like 2 minutes) at 32 weeks. I didn't do anything special before that one either.

  • you are absolutely correct with the fluid. my fluid is really low, and its always like cloudy and fuzzy and really have to know what your looking for. I get to quickly see my guy every week in 3d and he is stuck breach with half his face in the placenta.. or he has his feet in his face lol I go for lots of testing and after 30 weeks the start showing you views in 3d. hope you get some great pictures
