Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sippy cup & yogurt - when?

It's amazing all of the things I've forgotten since DD1 was this age.  When did you start giving your LO a sippy cup with water?  I know DD1 wasn't able to hold the cup for a while but we still helped her drink water from a sippy cup sometime after she started purees.  And when did you start yogurt?  I know Yo Baby says it's for babies over 6 months old but even at 7.5 months old, my babies still seem too little for yogurt.  TIA!!

Re: Sippy cup & yogurt - when?

  • I started both at 6 months. I mix some plain yogurt with her fruit purees most days and she has never had a problem. She loves the sippy cup, but can't really figure it out yet. I have bought her 3 different ones and she has gotten used to the taste of the water when I help her, but she hasn't really gotten the drinking part down yet.

Everything I read recommended starting both at 6 months, so that's what I did. I don't think it's a big deal if you wait a bit though if it makes you more comfortable.

  • We started solids at 4 months (I know you didn't ask this, but thought it would help reference our timeline). We started a sippy a little after 5 months and she did pretty good with it. We started yogurt at 6 months and she LOVES IT!

  • We plan to start yogurt at 7 months.  We may try a sippy soon.  At 8-9 months we will use a sippy more often. Mostly around snack time.

  • We've done the sippy with a little bit of water at about 6 1/2 months.  She likes the taste and knows out to get the water out if I'm holding it, but does not grasp the concept of finding the spout herself.  As far as yogurt, I'm going to wait a bit.  I had a bad milk alergy when I was young, so I think we are going to wait until 8 or 9 months, doc said ok at 7 mo.

  • I've been giving DD greek yogurt since 6 months. And started a sippy at 4 months just to play with. Around 6 months we started giving to her more often to actually use it.

i would ask your pedi about the yogurt.  Mine says wait til 1 year because it is still a dairy product.  Just because its made, it doesn't mean its always recommended.

While it's true that some babies have a dairy sensitivity, the "no dairy til 1" thing is misconstrued even by doctors.  They use that broad phrase to discourage people from giving milk in place of BM or formula.

  • We also started solids at 4 months... We tried the Gerber yogurt at 6 months and she vomitted that all up. So we waited another week and tried again. After the second try (which she did great with) I just started buying thick and creamy yoplait yogurt (no chunks of fruit in the thick and creamy). She absolutely LOVES it! I just started with flavors that she has already had, like peach, then tried vanilla. We now buy really any flavor and have also done greek yogurt, she doesn't really care either way. I like to get a big container of the vanilla and mix pureed fruit in. We make our own baby food, too, so we have already tried blueberries and strawberries, which have gone great as well. Our pedi said that since neither of us had a strong familial allergy, berries should be fine. He also said that the only other reason he tells parents to hold off on berries is if the baby has reflux (since berries are acidic). I know you didn't ask about berries, but I think people get so freaked out about dairy and berries... ask questions and do what feels right to you.
  • I haven't given DS yogurt, because he's sensitive to dairy, but, I gave DS a sippy cup at 7 months, a few days after he grabbed my glass right out of my hand and started drinking my water lol. I was going to wait for as long as I could though, until he let me know he was ready.
