3rd Trimester

Would you just be honest?

I'm 29 weeks prego and have been experiencing a LOT of ups and downs at my job.  I dk how much longer I'll be able to last here.  A few jobs have been in contact me because they have seen my resume online.

Would you just be honest and upfront about the pregnancy on the phone before going into the interview?  I figure they will see it when I show up at the interview anyway.  I just don't want to waste their time or mine if I will need to take off in 3 months for the baby and they aren't interested in hiring me.  My mom thinks it will put them in a weird place b/c they're not supposed to discriminate and she said they may feel like they cannot rescind the invitation to interview if I do admit it to them.

Friends have been saying to go ahead and interview regardless. What would you do?

  • Never give more information that is asked for. They will figure it out soon enough.

  • can't you just wait three more months and interview during mat leave or something for a new job?  You won't quality for FMLA at most jobs if you havent been there for a year.
  • Be honest. Most employers are actually very considerate about pregnancies. I've known alot of people who went out to get jobs after they got pregnant. They'll appreciate your honesty, and they might consider hiring you now as 'training' before you get off maternity leave.
  • I would go do the interview.  It should be obvious you're pregnant by now-if they don't bring it up though make sure to mention it and discuss your plans.
  • I agree no not reveal anything over the phone. Just go to the interview. Maybe they'll hold the position for after your leave. You never know.?

  • You need to "woo" them and let them "forget" you are pregnant.  I would never tell them you are or they will have it in their heads that you are not a fit already.
  • Go to the interview. They may love you enough to really want to make it work.  Once there - I'd probably bring it up towards the end to put all the cards on the table.  ESPECIALLY as your talking about needing to take 3 months.

You don't know what their mat leave policies are, and you definitely will not qualify for FMLA, which means they may not GIVE you 3 months!  Which may be something YOU want to consider if they were to offer you the job.

  • They're not going to be able to cancel b/c of that issue once they've offered you an interview.  They'll notice when you show up & then you can discuss...
  • Because of legal issues, I'm not sure anyone would actually tell you that they didn't want you to come in because you are pregnant.  The bigger issue though for you may be whether you will be at a new job long enough for FMLA or a maternity policy to apply for you to take off three months.  It would suck to get a job and then lose it or end up with no maternity leave.
