If you have a used pump it's always smart to get new tubing since that's where the breast milk flows through. I got mine from ebay.
Milk actually doesn't flow through the tubes, but it's still not a bad idea to replace them. They can get water in them from washing, etc, and may mold, etc. I think if they don't appear to have mold or anything like that, you could just boil them for 10 minutes to sterilize.
Both times I got a full pump parts kit from the LC at the hospital. If you are a FTM bring your pump and the LC will show you how to properly use it. This time I just asked for a kit and she brought me new tubing and a full set of membranes, containers, shields, etc. I'm sure it was figured into my bill but it felt "free"!
That is surprising that you were told to find a retailer. Medela directed me to their website and I ordered them right from there. I know that you can get some brands on Amazon or eBay, but sometimes they're knock offs and they're not exactly the right size.

They wear out so it's not a bad idea to have an extra set. When I had ds2 they gave me a kit. With dd ( different hospital) they didn't. Babies r us has most kits as well as amazon.

Re: New pump tubing....where did you get yours?
I bought this from Amazon:
