3rd Trimester

for those w/ spotting in early pregnancy

I'm from the 1st tri board, but figure I'll get more answers posting this on the other tri boards.

For those of you who had spotting in early pregnancy and have gone on to have healthy pregnancies, at what week(s) did the spotting occur? How many days did it continue? How often did it happen throughout the day?

I realize your experiences don't have anything to do with what my outcome will be, but at the moment it'd be nice to hear some reassuring stories as I don't know what else to do to calm down a bit. I am being proactive with my doctor, but still worried, of course.

Thank you for answering.

Re: for those w/ spotting in early pregnancy

  • I have cervical polyps and also had placenta previa early on. Both caused me to spot around 6 weeks and then on and off the rest of the pregnancy (I still have days where I spot). Good luck!

  • I spotted a 6 weeks until 10 weeks and then had a lot of blood when I had a SCH. Since that has cleared up I haven't had any problems (thank goodness!) and I am currently 30 weeks and everything looks good :) Good luck to you, I know it's scary!
  • Like a PP, I also spotted from 6 weeks to 10 weeks with a SCH.  However, mine was minimal.  A pantyliner was more than enough to deal with it.  I am now 3 days past due waiting on our baby girl.  Have you talked to your OB?   Mine checked on it right away by looking at things and by ultrasound.

  • I spotted from 4weeks and a couple days until 5 weeks and a couple days.  I would wear a pantyliner and it was never really saturated but I would have had stained underwear.  The color ranged from pink to red to brown.  The bleeding was heavier when I was working and better when I was relaxing.  Somewhere in the 5th to 6th week it stopped and never came back.

  • I had some spotting in my first pregnancy around 5 weeks. After an u/s, my OB attributed it to a sensitive cervix. Good luck!

  • Yes, I have been in to the OB. They did an transvaginal ultrasound. I'm only in the 4th week, so of course it's way to early to see anything with the baby. They did not see any active bleeding, though. My hcg was in an appropriate range and today I go back to have that tested again to make sure the numbers are doubling.

I've already had some brown spotting this morning, so it's the 4th day of it. Makes me feel better to know that others had spotting that lasted more than a few days. I was thinking it should have stopped by now or else it must be on it's way to getting worse. But it is not getting any heavier. A panty liner is enough. It mostly comes in the morning and then a bit in the evening. It's either very watery brown or flaky brown. Hoping it goes away soon and doesn't come back. My first week of knowing I'm pregnant has already been stressful because of this.  Hope my numbers look good today.

Thanks for the replies so far, ladies!

Couldn't that just be implantation bleeding?

I had a few days of light spotting here and there from about 6 weeks until about 13 weeks.  I was on progesterone suppositories and they were the only guess my OB gave me for what was causing it.

  • I would think that in 4 weeks, it would be implantation bleeding.

I bled at 7-8 weeks and it was determined I had a uterine tear. The doctor had me put me feet up and not overexert myself while the tear healed.

  • I had light spotting when I would wipe around week 5 for a few days. It was light pink/brown. My OB said it was old blood. After that I didn't spot again. Good luck.

I had what was probably implantation bleeding at 3 and 4 weeks.  It was enough that I needed either a panty liner or a very thin pad but never anything more than that.  It lasted about 5 or 6 days and then went away.  It was random of when it would happen during the day so I just wore a liner all day.  I got my BFP a few days later.  When I brought it up to my OB she wasn't concerned unless it kept occurring.  I went on to have a normal healthy pregnancy and LO.

Brown spotting is usually something that you won't need to worry about too much.  As pp said it very well might be from implantation bleeding.

Spotting in the first trimester is actually really common, but still scary.  I bled at 8 weeks and again at 14 weeks due to a SCH, freaked me out, but taking it easy really helps.

My OB did suggest it may just be implantation bleeding, which I am confused about. I didn't think you would really get implantation bleeding after a positive HPT. I started having the spotting a week after I had gotten a positive HPT. Also, confused because it has now lasted 4 days and I thought implantation bleeding was very minimal and over quickly.

  • I had light brown spotting one to two times a day from weeks 6-10. Around week 9, I saw a bit of pink, and a small dark brown clot, after which it tapered off completely. I had three extra first-tri ultrasounds and one internal check, none of which revealed a cause. Ever since, my pregnancy has progressed completely normally. My baby boy has passed every test with flying colors and I haven't had any complications. Once the doctor confirmed at nine weeks that everything was fine and that I should just take it as a normal pregnancy symptom for my body, my husband made me stop looking when I wiped. I've only checked a handful of times since.

I think I have a sensitive cervix, twice when I've looked after sex I've noticed tiny threadlike red spotting. Doc said this will happen more often than not. Good luck, I know how hard it is.

  • I had spotting at 5 weeks, 10 weeks, 13 weeks. It was attributed to a tear in my placenta, cyst on my ovary and low lying placenta. I just called each time it happened, they brought me in and did a u/s and pelvic. I was kept OB pelvic rest for my first 20 weeks. Good luck!

  • I had spotting at 6 weeks til about 10 weeks. Went to the ER TWICE! 2 different ER's because it was late at night and the first one was of no help (it wasn't where I'd be delivering but they were the one's that picked up on the pregnancy because I had no idea) so I then went to the one I'd be delivering at and the Dr there found a very large cyst on my right ovary. She said that we'd have to monitor it and make sure it wasn't getting any bigger because they would have to go in and remove it in the 2nd tri. I went to my OB the next week (still bleeding) and they told me the same thing, only this time the cyst has ruptured and so I had to be monitored on and off for a few to make sure everything was going well and then it all just stopped.

    Good Luck!

  • I had a bit of brownish spotting twice early on- once at about 4 weeks, and then again at about 6 weeks, and I freaked out both times!! The doc reassured me it was nothing- probably implantation bleeding. Also, my pregnancy started out as twins (we sadly lost one at about 12 weeks), and I've heard that spotting early in pregnancy can sometimes indicate multiples, so that may have had something to do with it.

Either way, the spotting turned out to be nothing at all. If you're worried you should call the doctor, but as long as it's just a little bit (not enough to soak a pad) and it's pinkish or brownish in color instead of bright red like a period, you're probably just fine.

  • In my first pregnancy, I had spotting from the very beginning until week 10.  The baby was full term and healthy.

In this pregnancy, my spotting started at 6 weeks and turned into straight bleeding off and on until week 11.  I had a tear this time around that was causing the bleeding and was put on strict bedrest for two weeks until the tear healed.  Everything has been great since then.

  • I've had a lot of spotting throughout my whole pregnancy.  Do you know your blood type?  That was my problem.  I'm type O negative.  I had pretty heavy bleeding at 4-6 weeks, they tested my blood type and gave me a Rhogam (sp?) shot and it stopped almost immediately (doc said baby's blood type is probably A, B, or AB positive and our blood types are fighting each other).  I started bleeding again at 20 weeks, 28, and this last at 36 weeks...each time they gave me that shot and it was fine.  The shot burns really bad, but it stopped my spotting immediately every time.  I'm 38 weeks now and me and baby are doing great!  Hope all goes well for you and your LO.

  • I had very light spotting (basically light brown tinged discharge) on and off from weeks 4-8. I would see it for a day or two, then it would disappear for a week or two so and come back. The doctor said it was probably some old blood getting pushed out of the uterus by the growing baby.
