Recommend Your Parenting Book...

Just looking for some recs... and, if you would, an explanation of why you like the book.  Obviously, we are all going to view parenting differently - but I don't even know where to start book-wise and I would like to read up on some approaches!

  • I like the old standby, "What to expect when you are expecting" and "what to expect the first year" and so on.  I know, boring.  But I love reading the chapters and questions.

  • I like What To Expect too. Beyond that, I've really enjoyed reading "Parenting with Love and Logic" which teaches a "natural consequence" approach to discipline in the hopes of raising responsible kids who are equipped to make their own wise decisions and solve their own problems. Sounds really great in theory, but DS is too young for me to try their techniques. They have "Love and Logic for Early Childhood" too which is the same principles, but it was nice to see it directly applied to older babies and toddlers.

  • My coworker got me this book and I haven't really read it yet but the reviews are great and she said it is a really loving common sense approach. The cover cracks me up.

  • My sister introduced me to "Love and Logic" series and I will be forever greatful to her. I used the principles of offering choices and asking the child imput for consequnces both with my 2 year old and my high school students. I belirve that children do better when they feel like they are in control of the situation (even though you really are). The ideas are very simple and the book gives you great real life examples. I recommend it to everyone i meet.
  • Brain Rules for Baby by John Medina. It's not exactly a parenting book, but it's about how to raise a smart and happy child (birth to 5 years). He's a neuro biologists and talks in a really interesting and relatable way about how babies' brain develop and what we do as parent that influences their future happiness and academic success. I got a lot out of that book and have recommended it to several people who all loved it too. Very useful information.

  • Someone on another thread recommended Positive Discipline for Preschoolers. Has anyone read it? From skimming on Amazon, it seems like it teaches basically the same principles as Love and Logic.
