Medication & breast feeding

Last week, I ended up having surgery to remove my iud which had migrated into my tight tube. My ob gave me antibiotics. I was very clear that I was still breast feeding and had said it numerous times in front of her while getting prepped for surgery. I just assumed they were safe to take. Yesterday, I looked up the medication and it is NOT safe for breast feeding and is actually pretty toxic. I called and left 2 messages for my dr to get clarification. I am so upset that she never mentioned to me or instructed that I pump and dump. She only said 24 hrs after surgery. I feel horrible that I gave LO something that could be harmful.

I would have assumed the doctor knew what she was talking about and taken the medication, as well. Especially since you flat-out asked her. Hopefully you can get some clarification soon. And, maybe a new doctor?

Also, I am pretty sure that would be a reportable offense.

  • Did you try looking up the medication on Kellymom.com? I have had to be on numerous medications after surgery while also breastfeeding. It is my understanding that some medications, while somewhat compatible with breastfeeding, will still have a CYA style warning on them...if your Dr did indeed prescribe something that absolutely should not have been taken while nursing, yikes...hope you get some answers soon.
