I remember a post a while back where everyone (myself included) was responding saying their LO's hated mesh feeders. DS actually cried when I gave it to him the first few times LOL. Well he was eying my plum today, so I cut him a piece and put it in the feeder, and he LOVED IT! Then at dinner he still seemed hungry after his normal grub, so I took out some frozen banana and he LOVED that too! He honestly sat in his high chair for like 20 mins absolutely silent, while we were fixing dinner... unreal. So if you feel like you wasted money on yet another dumb gadget, take another try, your LO may surprise you like mine did!
Re: Don't throw out those mesh feeders just yet!
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

Not everyone is into the BLW fad. Myself included.
I agree 100%! I don't use them for food though because DD gets a mix of purees and finger foods BUT, I do use them all the time for teething. I cut up an ice cube and put it in the mesh baggy and she sucks and gums on it till it melts, and even a little longer on the empty mesh baggy. Ice cubes last way longer than the freezer or fridge teething toys. It was a life saver for DH when he called me at work with a super fussy baby on his hands, I told him to do this and he said it worked like magic.
Having some table food isn't necessarily BLW.
I'm excited to use ours when its hot out with frozen fruit in it. He snack on fruit just fine but when its frozen its SO messy and the mesh feeders help.
Giving finger food isn't something you HAVE to do at this stage but I wanted to comment on your doctor's guidance because it's so off base. Molars are the chewing teeth and some kids don't even get those until well after they turn a year (the normal timeframe is 14 months). Front teeth won't help your baby chew table food and waiting to start any sort of table food until 14+ months is extreme.
Ya I know, and it disappointed me because I have friends who are giving cheese and things, and she also said no dairy. I know it would technically be OK, but I am just a worry wart who, if I am told something like that from a Dr., feels like I should follow it. I know, stupid. I am going to bring it up at his next appt. and see what she says, then make a decision whether to just go for it.
Of course, do what you're comfortable with but do know that this is just your doctor's personal preference. It's not based in medical fact and if you changed doctors there's a very high chance that you'd get the opposite guidance. Think through her guidance and if you don't like it, do some research and do what YOU feel comfortable with
Good to know! She didn't really get the mesh feeder the first couple of time we tried it, but I think I will give it a shot again.
FWIW, I wouldn't be comfortable handing my DD a whole plum just yet.
It's not really a "fad."
I know it's been around for a long time, but it's blown up on TB recently. It's not for everyone, and it drives me crazy that some people on here just don't get that. Some moms are just not comfortable handing their 6 month old a steak or a whole piece of fruit and letting them go at it. I don't like how people on here jump all over moms who aren't comfortable with BLW. I give DD small pieces of fruits and veggies as well as purees. She's doing great & it's what I'm comfortable with....so stop shoving BLW info down my throat.
Edit: That wasn't directed at you, Isha.
OP, I totally understand. I love my pedi and know that other pedis have recomended things that are different from mine's recs. I don't think you should blindly follow the pedi's advice, but the pedi would be the one that you would see and/or report to if (HEAVEN FORBID) something happened.
For example, if your pedi told you not to give LO anything other than purees and you gave LO a whole plum and he/she choked (really choked-as in need heimlich or ambulance/ER, not just gagging). I wouldn't want to be put in that position with the pedi saying, "Why did you ______ when I told you ______?"
BLW is not a "fad," but some pedis and mothers don't want to do it. I think each of us and our pedis have babies best interests in mind and do what we believe is best for our children. My son is almost nine mos. and has two teeth and I would not be comfortable giving him a whole plum even if I were right next to him. I don't hold it against anyone who does BLW because I think that they and their pedi have their child's best interest in mind.
Like I said, no one should do something they're uncomfortable with. My point is just that every doctor will have an opinion and which one you get is kind of luck of the draw so as long as you can do research to support what you WANT to do, you can, on some things, take their advice with a grain of salt. For example, there are pedis out there who still advocate for cereal in a bottle for better sleep or who advocate CIO. That's their opinion but it doesn't mean a parent HAS to follow it, kwim? I personally would never be ok saying "My pedi told me I can't..." He can't tell me what to do as a parent. I use him as one of my resources and turn to him for guidance on medical issues.
Our LO loves to eat anything frozen in there. We bought frozen fruits from the wholesale store (peach slices, raspberries, strawberries&bananas). She gets soo upset when it's finished.
I understand, and wasn't worried it was
But I think some people do not, legitimately, recognize that purees are a newer thing and that people didn't have them forever.
FWIW, we are doing a mix of BLW and purees too, mainly for convenience at daycare. She loves food in whatever form we give it.
