Confused about movement - 28 weeks

Hi all!

I'm a little confused because I know I'm supposed to start "counting kicks" but I'm not sure if I'm normal or if I should worry. Some days I don't hardly feel him move at all and then some days he's really active. Some evenings he's really active, some a little active and then others not active. I think he moves the most at night and very early in the morning (4-6am). How am I supposed to count kicks when he is obviously awake at these times and I'm sleeping? Should I be feeling him all though out the day now too?

I go to my doctors Thursday and plan on asking then but just want to see what some of you ladies think? Thanks!!

  • That sounds exactly like my LO.

I feel my LO's movement mostly after supper... but somedays are much more obvious than others.  I rarely feel him/her during the day when I am at work... maybe once every couple of days...

traditional kick counting can be difficult and not all that reliable for the reasons you stated.  Babies have sleep and wake cyles in utero just like they do when they are born, and if you are trying to do the traditional kick count (need 10 kicks in 2 hours), but do it when baby is sleeping, it can cause unnecessary worry.  What is more important is to just be aware of your baby's cycles, and if you notice a big change from those cycles where baby is moving a lot less, then call your doc to check in.  My doctor said at this point I should be able to feel her every hour or so (not necessarily a specific number of kicks), and if I don't, I should drink some juice and lay down until I do.

  • I don't count kicks. None of my doctors have ever recommended it and it just seems stressful having to worry if they dont kick a certain amount of times. I just make sure I feel baby move at some point every day. Mine has crazy days and quiet days.

  • I don't think this is recommended any more...my doctor never mentioned it. My LO has definite cycles...which I have been acutely aware of but that really didn't start until after 30 weeks.

  • I'm 29 weeks and asked my OB last week about this.  She said to not count kicks because of sleep cycles and it's not accurate.

this exactly I figgure If I can feel her move atleast a few times throughout the day I am good. I feel her alot when I first get home from work bu its hard to pay attention I am on the go all day at work.

  • I've never had a mw or dr ask me to do kick counts!! Just to make sure I feel movement, it's just another thing that's not worth the stress.

  • Due to GD I am supposed to do kick counts. They are not easy to do. Mostly I just need to note any decrease in movement. I woke her up today because I didn't remember her having an active time while I was at work. I just tap on my tummy in my belly button area and she will usual wake and react. Once I feel her I am good to go. Since the GD I have also started using my hand held doppler again. I had not used it since I started feeling movement alot around 18 to 20 wks.

  • I wouldn't worry too much as long as you are feeling movement everyday.  You will be able to tell if it's not enough.

  • I don't count kicks & my dr doesn't reccomend it either. Also I'm risk & he still doesnt reccomend it. The only thing he says is if I go two hours without feeling him move, concentrate on it, and see if I can feel him. if not, try drinking juice and/or eating something, give it another hour, and If not go to the er. our day to day movements put the babies to sleep, thats why we usualy feel them when we are still, or trying to sleep.

  • I just had an appt on friday last week and asked my OB about this, because it seemed odd and I'd never heard it mentioned before. She told me straight up that kick counting is old school and BS. And that the whole idea of kick count as a measure of baby's health was not really relevant, but that all they would be looking for was to feel 8-10 kicks over any 2 hr period in a day. Well gee.. everyone feels that!

For me, baby moves morning and night times mainly, and especially moreso when I am sitting and have cramped up her space more. So no, don't bother with kick-counting, its just another one of those silly things worrying new moms unnecessarily that really should be taken out of conversation circulation, we have more important things to think about!

  • Thank you ladies! I do know his "schedule" so I will just watch for that. I appreciate all the responses!
