Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Another solids post

I have a seven month old who is EBF. We currently do one solid meal a day of about 1/3 of a jar of purees. I am reading on here about people doing three solid meals a day. Our pediatrician said a few weeks ago to do one solids meal a day at a minimum. I guess I am wondering when to add a second meal at lunch time. We currently do it at dinner time. Thanks for any information.

Re: Another solids post

  • It's so dependent on the kid TBH.

My pedi told me to trust me instincy and the goal is 3 meals a day by a year or a bit after.

We started solids at 4.5 monthsish and we did one meal until almost 6.5 months. I just didn't think she was ready for or needed more than that until then.

LO one is 8 months old today and I have no plans to add a 3rd meal anytime soon. She's moving onto finger foods (on a puree strike apparently) and isn't eating much anyways at the moment.

  • I'm with Dairygirl in that each kid is different.  My DD was only on 2 solids a day until just shy of a year, but DS will throw a FIT if we don't give him food each and every time we eat so he gets three meals and one snack a day.  Just go with your gut.  If your LO seems to want more give it a try so long as they aren't dropping nursing sessions or bottle feedings in place of solids quite yet.

  • i usually do one in the AM, and one in the PM, and sometimes a yogurt in the afternoon. sometimes we get to the PM one, sometimes we dont. It depends on his nap schedule, where we are, etc... I dont stress too much about it. Whenever you feel like your LO is ready, go ahead and try to add the second meal.

  • We still only do 1.  When LO starts to show more interest in solids, then I'll add a second.

  • We started with oatmeal in the mornings for a couple weeks and then introduced fruits and veggies just once a day in the morning.  After a few days I just went ahead and tried an afternoon meal also.  I make sure to nurse her just as much as always (so about 5x total in a day now that she STTN) and then try solids 1/5-1 hr after she nurses.  Most of the time she takes both meals great.  Sometimes she just isn't in to it, so I will try again later or just do one meal a day.  It's more important that they are getting the BM or formula.  The solids are more for practice right now.  Her pedi at her 6m appt said that as we get closer to the 9m appt to be at 3 meals per day.

  • I think that it is very dependent on the child.  I have the babysitter do a meal at lunch and than I do the second one at dinner.  Every now and than (normally on the weekends) I am able to do a fruit in the morning.  However, he seems to do best with the two meals right now.
