Babies: 6 - 9 Months

My 7.5 month old hates solids still...any tricks?

She refuses to eat them... she closes her mouth, shakes her head and gags if I try to force it. I have tried every fruit and veggie under the sun. Pedi thinks I should bring her to baby nutritionist to get tips... anyone on here in similar boat? Thanks! Btw.. she is 70th percentile for weight so its not really an issue, she loves her milk.. I am still breastfeeding.

  • I wouldn't worry at this stage.

Some kids love solids. Some kids don't.

Mine is in the middle. One day she can't get enough...the next she won't touch it.

I started introducing some finger foods and that helped a lot. She loves to feed herself..so maybe try that route?

  • I agree with dairygirl.  I don't think it's anything to worry about it.  She will come around in her own time.  All she needs right now is BM or formula.  Just continue to offer it to her regularly and she'll get there.

  • I agree with PP. It took my LO 3 weeks before he decided he wanted to start eating. We just tried once a day, but I didn't force it. He likes to hold the spoon and won't even open his mouth if he isn't. He also likes the puree a little chunkier.

  • This is my DD!  We started at 6 months, and she still barely eats anything.  If she takes one good bite in a day, I'm trilled.  She will not take a spoon, so we are doing BLW.  Basically she feeds the dogs.  My mom said that I didn't start eating much until at least 8 months, and she doesn't understand why I keep "pushing" solids.  I know I am going to be in "trouble" with the pedi at 9 months but whatever...I'm not going to cram food down her throat.

  • I don't have any tricks but I'm having the same experience. My 7.5 month old won't eat solids at all. When i try it usually ends in tears. The past few days I have been putting pieces of avocado on the tray and she just plays with them. Occasionally she'll out a piece in her mouth. Its a start I suppose. She gets mad when I try to spoon feed her. My dr. wasnt worried.. Just said to keep offering them.

  • Mine hates solids too.  My ped said not to worry, keep offering and she'll eat when she's ready.  Since she's gaining fine and I'm assuming she's meeting all of her milestones, then I wouldn't worry about it...I'm not!

  • We're on our third week of solids, and I know it's way too early to worry, but my daughter has refused anything so far. I think after 3 weeks and 4 different foods, she's taken maybe two or three actual bites of food. The only thing that concerns me is our pedi said she needs to up her calorie intake as her weight gain is slowing down. Luckily she is still taking her oat cereal so I'm thinking of mixing that with some veggies.

  • We've been on solids for 2 months now, but LO flat refused veg until I mixed in some rice cereal. He would get so mad at the soupy-ness of the puree that he'd raspberry it back out... all over my computer... Also, playing music videos for him would distract him enough that he'd eat without really thinking about it. The combination of distraction and rice really helped and he's been eating like a champ since.

  • Trying to force it is probably the problem. Have you looked into baby led weaning? At this age they really don't need solids so I wouldn't worry about it and just let her have fun with food.

  • My LO started out on homemade purees and did well, but then started refusing any and all purees.  However, if I give him chunks of food he will eat until we make him stop for fear of him over-stuffing himself.  He is all about finger foods and won't even open up for the purees anymore.

PPs are right, though, in that all they really need at this point is formula or BM so don't get yourself too worked up.

ETA:  Breastfed babies almost always start to drop on the growth chart after 6 months.  My little guy is barely holding the 1st percentile and even his pedi isn't concerned that his curve is slowing down as its completely normal at this age.

This exactly. Don't force it. And don't use distraction.  They will eat when they are ready and hungry. I agree with going on to BLW if they aren't interested in purees. Trust me, you do not want to get into food struggles with your child because you will lose.

  • We had trouble with solids (purees mostly).  DS loves to feed himself so we started giving finger foods and that helped.  He doesn't eat a whole lot since about half ends up in his mouth.  He is in the 3% for weight so I was trying anything to get him to eat more.

I tried the squeeze pouches of baby food and he LOVES them.  He sucks them down in about 3 minutes.  I get the Happy Baby Organic brand or the Target Up & Up brand.  I am so glad I found them.  Now he eats 2-3 of these a day along with his formula.

  • Another vote for baby led weaning. I also would not force anything. Let LO play and explore and if they manage to eat some, great!

  • Try some "real" foods. LO is not a puree fan but loooooves his toast with "jam" (jam=fruit purees spread on top) and he loves bagels with cream cheese, baked sweet potato "fries", pasta, banana chunks, sliced peaches and mangoes and other stuff.

Just supervise well and give it a go. It is hard at first because it takes them a bit to figure out how to move things around their mouth and "chew". The often have to "cough" something up to the front of their mouth to continue chewing before swallowing, it can be scary for mom, but is a totally normal reflex.

Do some reading on Baby Led Weaning and try it out. Now, LO "chews" like a champ and has no problem with real food. DH even makes him grilled cheese sometimes and he scarfs it down!
