Who's doing a single embryo transfer?

My RE has told me that transferring 2 will give me a 50% chance and a 35% if 1 is transferred. I hate the lower odds, but I don't know if we can handle twins. Anyone else with me on this? Have you done a SET before? What feedback has your RE given you?
3 ectopic pregnancies (EDD's 1/30/12-tube removed, 6/2/12-methotrexate and 10/2/12-methotrexate)
IVF and Natural FET resulted in BFN's and a hole in our wallets
Natural BFP #4 on 9/7/12 gave us our miracle on 5/18/13

Re: Who's doing a single embryo transfer?

  • Mt RE's office is pushing me to do only 1. I'm pushing to do 2. They won.

May I ask why they pushed you to do 1?

  • I did a eSET.  My RE said transferring two only increased my chances of twins.  It did stick, but I m/c at 8w5d.

I was pushing to do another eSET for my FET, but based on the quality of our frosties, my RE highly recommended to put both back.

Good luck in whatever decision you make!

  • I did 2 SET. One was a chemical and one worked. It was recommended because I lost twins at 22 weeks. I am glad I did. I would listen to your RE. It wouldn't be recommended if they didn't think embryo quality was good.
  • This time (yesterday, actually) and for IVF #1 we did single embryo transfers.  Primarily because I have a uterus issue, and also because we had 5 day blasts.

  • Is your RE leaving it totally up to you, or do they have a preference either way?

At this point I would feel doubly blessed to have twins (and will do just about anything to increase the odd), but I don't have any health issues that would increase the riskiness of the pregnancy.  If I did, I may have a different opinion.

I feel like this.  My RE is leaving it up to us.  I am starting stims this week.  I want to wish you good luck!  :)

  • He has left it up to me and didn't push me in one direction or another. He asked how I feel about twins and agreed with me about the added stress. In his words "you go from not being a parent to having to be pushed beyond your means physically, emotionally and financially".

  • You don't have to make a decision now. You can base it on the quality of embryos on transfer day.

If IVF is covered under your insurance or money is not an issue regardless, studies have shown that pregnancy rates are similar between transferring multiple embryos at a time vs. transferring them individually after having been frozen but over several cycles.

Thank you! I have read similar studies. Unfortunately I have no IVF coverage.

Me neither. I'm not a candidate anyway due to my age. Good luck with your decision.

  • We did one with our fresh cycle. We would have done two if it were a 3dt, but since it was a 5dt and we were going to have some to freeze, we did one. We don't have any IVF coverage, but I felt very strongly about avoiding twins if we could. I wanted the best chance at a healthy pregnancy, and choosing to transfer one was the only part of the process that I felt I had any control over.

  • We had 5 day blasts too, and my RE recommended 2. I think it all depends on the quality and chances, and willingness to accept twins. Fingers crossed for my own BFP on Tuesday.

  • My RE and I have discussed this and it will be a game time decision.

Guidelines for my age/history/diagnosis suggest transfer of 2. To me, it will all depend on how many eggs I get, the quality and how many are likely to make it to freeze.

I might not be able to afford another fresh cycle, so I might select an eSET if I have several good quality that are likely to make it to freeze. A FET is much for affordable.

On the flipside, if I have three not so great quality and none are likely to make it to freeze, I might transfer all three.

It will be a game time decision.

    Good luck!

  • I will be doing IVF next month and my RE has left the decision up to us, she said that with my age and us having MFI I could do 1.  DH and I had decided a while back that we feel comfortable transfering 2.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

  • HI  My RE recommended doing 1 at a time.  According to him he states quote "when you play darts and your aiming for the bullseye would you throw one or two at a time"  Of course my answer was one lol  RE says twins are hard for the mother and the growing babies.  IDK it's really all a matter of opinion in my opinion.  Medical Politics.  Although I can say I had a single embryo transfer about 10days ago and got a positive Preg Test 2 days ago so I am hopeful.  Awaiting my Beta on Friday to confirm.  Good Luck with whatever you decide.   Everyone always says "it only takes one"
