How do I get rid of it? The nursery reeks. I've read that you need to soak the diapers and since I have a front loader I specifically will put them in an extra soak cycle, but I can't get the smell to go away? Any suggestions?
I wash mine as normal..then do a hot soak cycle and let it sit as long as I reasonably can (I try for overnight).
Then I wash them again but use bleach and nothing else. I do 1/4 cup in a large load. Then I triple rinse.
I know people on here are anti-bleach...but it works so so well. Better than Dawn or anything else I've tried.
I've only done it twice in 8 months. I've also figured out the key is to double rinse at the end of your regular/everyday cycles too. The second I don't I seem to have issues.
I'm a big fan of the baking soda & vinegar trick. Try 1/2 cup of baking soda along with your detergent in your heavy wash along with a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the fabric softener compartment (this will be released during the final rinse). I found that to help a TON. And sunning outside also acts as a disinfectant which can help too. Best of luck!
Do you know if you had hard water? If so, beware of using vinegar, it often makes the ammonia smell worse.
I would try a plain hot water strip to flush out any detergent buildup. Just lots of hot water washes with no soap. I also switched to Tiny Bubbles detergent and it went away completely!
