Pregnancy & Labor on TV and in Movies

Last night I was indulging a guilty pleasure by watching Saved By The Bell on DVD.  I was watching the earthquake episode where the pregnant Mrs. Belding gets in the elevator with Zack and Tori.  While in the elevator there is an earthquake and it gets stuck between floors.  No big deal, right?  But just then, Mrs. B goes into labor!!  And 5 mins later, with no water breaking, no contractions, no blood, no goo, no umbilical cord, just a little pushing with the encouragement of the gang outside the elevator, Mrs. B delivers a nice clean 6 month old.

Now, I fully understand that for entertainments sake, they portray the expedited version of L&D, but sometimes it's just ridiculous!!  What TV show or movie portrayal of  pregnancy and or L&D have you seen and thought, "oh come on!!".?  This should be fun...

p.s. Yes, I have Saved By The Bell on DVD, as I said, guilty pleasure. Lol

  • this totally made me laugh out loud... I have watched SBTB, but never saw that episode I think...

I like in the movie with Drew Barrymore, Riding in cars with boys, where her water breaks in the kitchen and it's about 5 gallons worth of water that just drops between her legs... its like... really? wow...

  • i have a few. the first one that annoys me are the friends episodes. i love friend, totally my favorite show...but the birth episodes kind of annoy me!

first when rachel has emma and she's breech. but no issues delivering and not too much grunting or labor pains, etc.

second is when erica gives birth to twins and doesn't know it. again no issues, both come out her vagina and again not really any pain at all.

another one that i find a little more realistic is the other boyeln girl when scarlet johansen has her son and is screaming her head off. at least i find that one more real because it shows her bearing down and sweating and making noise, etc.

i'm sure i'll think of more so i may have to come back and ETA them, lol.

  • OMG! I loved that episode!  It was sooo dramatic.

I can't think of any right off the bat that irritate me, but I just had to comment that I love you for having Saved By The Bell on DVD.

the most recent one I can think of is Angela on the Office.  Her baby looked like it was 6 months too.  But obviously it was a play on it being Dwight's baby and "hearty and robust" etc, but still ridic for a newborn.

Aaaaahhhh!!  I just read your post and I am only up to season 7!!  Oh well.  Hopefully it gets funny again.  Seasons 6 and 7 got a little weak, not terrible, just a little weaker.

These posts are good so far.  Come to think of it, wasn't there a 90210 elevator birth also?  Brandon delivered it.  Pretty similar to the SBTB elevator birth.

  • I just saw something the other day and thought, wow. this actually seems realistic. Now I can't remember what it was! Knocked Up maybe?

  • The most ridiculous L&D related movie I've seen lately is The Back-Up Plan...esspecially when the woman has the water birth in her home...it's....well awkward and I had a hard time not laughing while watching the scene.
Poor DH watched the movie with me and through most of it he was all "Yeah, totally not how that happens" and when the water birth scene came up he looked at me with ginormous eyes and said "Oh gawd I hope not!" haha. I nearly peed I laughed so hard at him.

With Friends (my all-time fav show...) I dislike 98% of the birth scenes esspecially with Rachel because of the women who come in to share the room...the one girl who has near hiccups for contractions...oh geez...makes me want to jump through the screen haha.

L&D in movies and TV make me laugh so hard...esspecially when the 6 months old babies are born.

  •  I watched a the episode of Scrubs recently where Carla is in labour and was thinking "what the hell...?". She's pushing for all of five minutes before they discover that the baby's cord is wrapped around its neck and they rush her off for a c-section. After she's had the baby, her husband makes a comment about her having "ice packs on her huuey". Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely if she'd had a c-section she wouldn't have ice packs there?

Rachel's first u/s on Friends cracks me up... They have her laying on her back with her feet in stirrups and she makes comments that makes it pretty obvious it's a trans-vag u/s... ...yet the tech very clearly doesn't have the wand anywhere near Rachel's BODY, let alone her uterus, and she's saying all this stuff like "here's x, here's x" like she's moving it around in her body...? It just baffles me. I mean, are we supposed to think she got a photo while she was up there or what? Here it is:

Oh no way - that one is probably as close as they can get for a movie L&D, they show the crowning and everything. All that was really lacking was an episotimy or tear, and maybe pooping on the table.

  • I havent watched saved by the bell in years.. but I loved it too- no judging. (I still watch episodes of sex and the city) lol

I dont remember this episode either.

  • I agree with the people who said the "Friends" episodes- but it is when Phoebe has the triplets that it is so unrealistic.  At least when Rachel is "pushing" she has her legs up around her ears lol.

Knocked Up was sort of realistic- except the "shocking" scene of her vag was so clean.  No blood, no goo, no hair lol.

  • It's not a labor scene, but it always bugs me when I watch "The Departed" and Vera Formiga tells Matt Damon that she's pregnant...and she shows him an ultrasound of like a 20 week old baby and tells him it's a boy. And yet she just found out that she's pregnant. No bump, no nothing, and they're trying to pass it off like she's only 6 weeks along. Maybe they figured that mostly guys would be watching the movie and wouldn't know the difference?
