Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Dropping the paci and the swaddle at the same time?

I think it's about time we got rid of the swaddle (DD2 will be 8 months next week!).  I can't decide if we should also get rid of the paci when we do sleep training this weekend.  She's an ok sleeper right now and when she wakes up at night (usually once or twice, we give her the paci and she goes right back to sleep).

Also, we use the paci alot on car rides and stroller walks (neither of which she likes).

Ugh...I just don't know if we should drop the paci altogether or continue to use it for non-sleeping times.

Please help me decide.

  • We dropped the paci and swaddle at the same time (around 5 months) for sleeping.  However, she is now a thumb sucker during naps/bedtime.  I personally don't mind but something to think about if you have an issue with it.  For us it was just easier to sleep train once rather than multiple times.  She does still get her paci in the car if she wants.  Most of the time she just plays with it anyway.  So keeping it for daytime activities hasn't been an issue for us.

See that's what we did with DD1 (did sleep training and got rid of the swaddle and paci at the same time).   But DD1 was an awful sleeper up to that point and could never keep the paci in her mouth at night which is why we did the sleep training!    I think I'm leaning towards giving the paci up for sleep, but using it during the day in the car, etc.. when we need to because most of the time my DD also just plays with it like a teether too!

  • We did both cold turkey about a month ago and it has been smooth sailing. Honestly, the transition went very well which shocked me. still give it to him to play with during the day, but he doesn't seem to miss it at night.  If your intention is to get rid of both eventually, IMO it's easier to do both at once. Rather than going through the whole weaning process twice. But what worked for me won't work for everyone.  GL!

  • We tried to get rid of both at about 4.5 months. It was clear pretty quickly that it wasn't going to work. I was much more concerned about getting rid of the swaddle, so we gave back the pacis. They still have them, but really just use them to fall asleep, not all night long. It really depends on your LO, but my LOs are better dealing with one change at a a time.
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

  • I would.. Why let her cry now about the swaddle then cry again when you take paci away.. I would just do both at the same time and save a trip down the road!
