Baby Names

girls name ideas

I am only 14 weeks along, so I know I have a lot of time to figure this out, but DH and I cannot come up with a girls name we like! I was born in the mid-80's and am named Ashley, and I HATED growing up with so many others with my name, so we want something that isn't too common, but also don't want anything too crazy. I lean more towards older fashioned names, and LOVE Eleanor, but DH doesn't love it.

Also, being named Ashley I hated the lack of good nicknames, I always got stuck being called Ash, so I would like a name with some nickname options. (Eleanor would have been called Nora). Thanks for any help...I'm just stuck and can't think of anything!

Re: girls name ideas

  • I feel your pain, I am an Amanda and there was always a gang of us running around. Plus Mandy, sigh, I always hated my nicknames. I love old fashioned names myself and I really like Eleanor or even Leonora. You have sooo much time, I know for personal experience (being 4 weeks farther along then you and oh so experienced) that you will find fifty names that you will love. I have a list a mile long.

If you like old fashioned you can Google top 100 names of different decades and look that way. Most of the names that were popular at that time are now perfect for being original while still being a solid NAME you know?

Also, you may be having a boy, so don't get stuck on girls names!

  • Any older relatives you can name baby after? We're naming our baby after my grandmother. Her name is actually Kathleen, but we prefer her middle name, Lillian. We'd rather not use nicknames but it gives room for Lilly; Anne; or even Lil.

Off the top of my head:

Elizabeth (Liz; Lizzie; Lilly; Betty; Beth)
    Cecilia (Ceci; Leah/Lia)
    Eliza (Liza; Liz)
    Emmalin (Emma; Em; Emmy; etc)
    Abigail (Abi; Gail)
    Grace (Gracie)
    Luella (Lou/Lu; Ella)

  • Oooh, or Etta! I love that name.
  • My sisters name is Lorelei Josette and I think it's a good combination of old fashion and modern. She never goes by a nickname, always Lorelei!

  • I know a lady who called her baby girl Estelle. You could call her Elle for short.
