Peanut Butter?

Not quite pregnant yet but I'm full of questions today!

Maybe this was a myth I saw somewhere but I swear I read pregnant women shouldn't eat peanut butter for fear of a peanut allergy in LO. I read on the Mayo Clinic website though that they recommend it as a good source of protein.

Does anyone have any information/links about pregnancy & peanut butter? I eat a significant amount - I used to joke that I would always win Fear Factor eating competitions if I could use peanut butter as a condiment - but I wouldn't want to increase my LO's chance of an allergy.

Neither DH nor I have any food allergies (I can't think of anyone in either family with any) & I'm a vegetarian and plan on continuing that through pregnancy so ideally I wouldn't have to cut out peanut butter.

Any tips?

Re: Peanut Butter?

  • sorry just lurking on here but ive never heard that. i would think it would be opposite though- i'd think if baby was 'exposed' to it in the womb he/she would be less likely to develop it rather than more so, but ive never heard anything either way.

  • Yeah that was my original thought process but I don't know anything about food allergies because I've actually never known anyone with a peanut allergy. I don't know how or when allergies form in babies.

  • I have read that if you or your husband have a peanut allergy then don't eat peanuts because your child may have the allergy (you probably wouldnt even have them around anyway in that case).  But other than that its perfectly safe.  Enjoy your peanut butter!  It's definitely a great source of protein for us vegetarian mommas ;)

  • I hear a lot of people saying not to eat peanutbutter, but unless there is cause for concern, peanut butter is great while pregnant.  The protein really helps m/s.
  • I wouldn't stress too much about it, my opinion but I think society puts tooo much worry out there about this causing that and that causing this. This kind of thing wouldn't happen 50 yrs ago, it's all the crap they put in our foods..

My 10 yr old daughter loved steak as a toddler, like LOVED it, more than my boys ever did and she started growing boobs at 8 and she now has a period...at the age of 10! I swear its from the hormones they pump in the beef...It's crazy.

I think as long as we try to eat as healthy as we can then our babies will do just fine :)

  • I heard this one for the first time the other day.  Of all the things my OB told me not to eat, PB wasn't on the list.  I ate PP when I was pregnant with DD and I've eaten PB since finding out I was pregnant.  I think it's more of an issue if food alergies run in your family.

  • I have heard this too, but I ate peanut butter/peanuts when I was pregnant with DD (like on a daily basis...I was addicted), and she turned out just fine. And she loves pb too! We don't have allergies in our family. Again with this pregnancy, I'm eating a lot of peanut butter...so I hope what I hear isn't true.

  • I've heard different things.  Some people with no history themselves nor family history of peanut allergies but child ends up with a peanut allergy and the mom ate lots of peanuts/PB when pregnant.  But I've also heard the opposite, eating lots of PB and no history and child has no allergies.  So really who knows.  I'm limiting my peanut/PB intake to about once a week just to be on the safe side.  It's so hard to say what's really right, there isn't really research out there.
  • I just saw my doctor this past Tuesday and asked if I should worry about eating Peanut Butter. She said that unless I have a peanut allergy, then I shouldn't worry and that its great to include in your diet. Just eat whatever you and your baby are needing and desiring.
  • You could always eat almond butter if you're worried! And it's healthier for you!

I started growing boobs at 7 and started my period at age 10 and I didn't love steak so.... ;)
