I cannot figure out why I'm gaining weight at 5 weeks! I've gained a few pounds. I must be super bloated, too, because my pants are already tighter, and sometimes I catch sight of myself in the mirror, and I look like I'm already showing (which obviously I'm not). I was actually hoping to lose a little weight in the first trimester--not by dieting but by eating healthy and not drinking, because I was a tad bit overweight when I started (just 10 pounds or so).
Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Should I just embrace it?
Re: weight gain already?!
If you are listening to your body and not just eating everything in sight because "you can bc your pregnant and deserve any bad thing you want", I wouldn't worry about it. There are such big ranges of weight gain/loss that I've heard in the first tri. Sounds like maybe you are bloated. Drink lots of water to help.
As far as starting to look pregnant, it is possible in first tri (just not noticable to strangers). I am almost 8 weeks and my sister (who knows I'm pg) told me she could tell... I have already "popped". I haven't been comfortable in my jeans since week 5 and this past week, I have not been able to button them at all. I have not gained any weight.

Baby Boy Born 10/11/12! (Not on purpose)
I assure you it's just bloat. You'll wake up one day and look totally normal again. There is no way you're showing - the baby is the size of a blueberry.
Bloat, bloat, bloat. Fun, huh? And if you're lucky like me you may also have fun symptoms like gas or constipation which help the belly swell too.
I was hoping to also lose/stay the same in the first tri for health reasons but I think we just have to embrace it in the 1st tri until morning sickness gets under control. Like a pp said, I'm eating away the nausea - fortunately it's mostly stuff like fruit instead of cupcakes
Oh yeah, and like another pp said, it does go away, you will feel and look a bit more like yourself later. Just embrace the baggy clothes for now!
Bloat, baby, uterus, fat, whatever! I don't care what the cause is... I am feeling fatter than ever. I have gained 8 lbs over the past few months and I've been eating pretty healthy (with an occasional cheeseburger weeks 6-9 during the m/s).
I bought maternity pants at 11 weeks and I feel SO MUCH BETTER!!!
My jeans fit okay, but they pressed on my belly and I didn't realize how uncomfortable & painful that was until I started wearing these maternity pants. I got the kind with the full stretchy top from Motherhood Maternity. My mom had to take 4 inches off the bottom because they were so long. I highly recommend trying bottoms that do not squeeze the belly!
