Sleeping face into mattress...

I know this has been asked before, but I need some feedback... DS is now flipping all over, which is fine, we got him out of the ol' Sleep Suit and he seems comfy with his new freedom. This morning I found him face down into the mattress, like not face to the side, face down-- he was still sleeping when I woke up. I saw his back rising and falling so I knew he was fine, and I know that I cannot stay up all night making sure he is OK, and that he is going to do what he is going to do. That being said, when he did wake up, he was whimpering (which he doesn't usually do), I went in, and his breathing was laboured, and he was noticeably upset. I picked him up and cuddled him and that's when I noticed the shallow or raspy tone to his breaths. He started to cry a bit, so I just stopped for a minute to let him give out a big cry, to clear his airways or whatever, and to make sure he was breathing fine, which he was once he cried, then I calmed/ nursed him.

So here is the thing, has this happened to anyone? I know he needs to learn not to sleep on his face, but do you think he just scared himself waking like that? Do you think it was harder for him to breath face smushed in, so that's why he was breathing weird at first? He was fine all day, but it just got me a little shook up. Thoughts?

Re: Sleeping face into mattress...

  • DS started this around 7 months.  He's been fine =)  I get your anxiety though, luckily DS sleeps in our room so I got to listen to him all night.

  • My kid has been sleeping face down on her mattress since like 4 months.

We're here to tell about it still. ;)

My LO does that weird raspy breathing thing when she wakes up too. I think it has more to do with startling herself awake.

Mine "whines" every morning since birth, so I can't help you there. She's always done it.

  • My LO just started doing this too.  I have had such little sleep because of it.  He sleeps fine though :)  I think he is now more comfortable on his belly.

  • DS did this at first when he learned to belly sleep but then stopped.  I moved his head because I'm paranoid.

  • my DS used to do this though I'd turn him over again because he sleeps beside me in our queen size bed.  This is another reason why I just can't bring myself to have him sleep in his crib in his own room yet.  I'm a paranoid FTM and can sleep soundly with him beside me (because I know I'll wake up if he moves).

Just a thought about the raspy breathing, do you have a mite resistant mattress cover?  I'm just thinking if he's breathing the air from the mattress that mites could possibly be living in, this might cause a breathing issue.  My DH has asthma, so I bought a mite mattress cover for our bed and change the sheets weekly and his asthma has improved since.  Just a thought, I don't know if that was actually the case or if it was fluke, but there are studies that approve the use of mattress covers.
