I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find the right post link to a previous discussion...
I just took baby to the pedi today for what I thought was a persistent diaper rash. It's actually a yeast infection and I feel terrible for not having known and continuing to try to treat it with diaper creams!!
Anyhow..he prescribed Nystatin for the infection, is this ok to use with cloth diapers or should I switch to disposables until it clears up? Also, anything I need to do to the cloth diapers I used all of last week while she was infected and I didn't know?
Re: LO has yeast infection...can I still CD?
Yeast is h*ll on CD's. Here's what we did when DS had a bad yeast rash -
Switched to sposies for TWO WEEKS - yeast is there even when you don't think it is and since Nystatin is usually prescribed for 10 days, I recommend using sposies for the extra 4 to make sure it's completely gone.
In that two week time, I did 2 stripping cycles with bleach on EVERY diaper, pail liner, wet beg, wipes if you use cloth ones, seriously anything diaper or booty related. So basically after washing my dipes normally, I filled up my top loader with hot water and 1/3 cup of bleach (make sure the bleach goes in the second you turn the water on so that it gets dilluted and won't bleach your dipes). I put my dipes in, ran a normal cycle, rinsed until I didn't smell bleach (4-5 times to be safe), and then sun dried bc sun kills yeast. I did this whole cycle two times to make sure all of the yeast was gone.
After two weeks, I used my dipes and everything again and we were good to go
Make sure you do lots of no diaper time to help your LO's booty breathe and dry out. Good luck!
Ditto these two points. It's important to bleach everything that comes into contact with your LO's bottom and the CD's to make sure all the yeast is dead.
Check out this entry on the Bummis Blog about how to treat CD's when your LO has a yeast rash.
